History of Haneda Airport

Haneda Airfield first opened in August 1931 on a small plot of reclaimed land in the western part of the modern airport complex. Before its construction, this area was a thriving resort centered around the Anamori Inari Shrine, and Tokyo's main airfield was considered to be Tachikawa Airfield. Over nearly a century, Haneda has transformed from a small airfield into one of the largest aviation hubs in Asia.

Today, Haneda Airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 serve domestic flights within Japan, while Terminal 3 is oriented toward international flights. The Keikyu train reaches Shinagawa Station in about 15 minutes. The Keikyu line is integrated with the Asakusa subway line, allowing travelers to reach the airport without transfers from the Asakusa and Ginza districts. Tokyo Monorail connects Haneda with Hamamatsucho Station — another quick option for passengers.

Limousine Bus services connect the terminals with major hotels and business districts in Tokyo. There is a direct bus from Terminal 3 to Odaiba — a popular district on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay.

Surroundings: Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay

Haneda Airport is located in southeastern Tokyo, across the Tama River from the city of Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture. From the terminals, you can reach the Rainbow Bridge — a transportation artery connecting central Tokyo with Odaiba Island. Access is available by direct bus or via a transfer at Shimbashi Station to the Yurikamome automated line.

Near the airport is the Tokyo Freight Terminal — the main railway station serving freight transportation in central Tokyo. The industrial coastal zone contrasts with the resort area of Odaiba, where shopping malls and observation decks overlooking Tokyo Bay are concentrated.
