Ropshinskoye Highway in Peterhof — Online Webcam
Ropshinskoye Highway: Gateway to Peterhof's History
Ropshinskoye Highway is a major road that connects Saint Petersburg with the Leningrad Region through one of Peterhof's most colorful districts. This road leads to places where imperial history, the natural beauty of the Izhora Heights, and modern metropolitan infrastructure intertwine. The online webcam on Ropshinskoye Highway allows you to observe the traffic and atmosphere of this strategically important direction in real time.
Ropshinsky Palace: The Tragedy of Peter III
The main historical landmark of these places is the Ropshinsky Palace, which became the place of death of Emperor Peter III in 1762. The palace coup of June 28 (July 9), 1762 brought Catherine II to power, and her deposed husband spent his last days here under unclear circumstances. In 1750, Bartolomeo Rastrelli created a reconstruction project for the estate on the orders of Elizabeth Petrovna. Later, Pyotr Eropkin, Yuri Felten, Carlo and Giovanni Battista Scotti, and Luigi Rusca worked on the interiors.
For a long time, the estate belonged to Prince-Caesar Fyodor Romodanovsky — generalissimo of the amusement troops and favorite of Peter I. After 1801, Paul I bought the palace into state ownership. In 1990, Ropsha was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments." Unfortunately, in 2015 the pediment collapsed, and today the palace needs large-scale restoration.
Ropshinsky Heights During the Siege of Leningrad
Ropshinsky Heights — reaching 120–130 m above sea level — were of strategic importance during the 872-day Siege of Leningrad (September 8, 1941 – January 27, 1944). From September 1941 to January 1944, the settlement of Ropsha was occupied by fascist troops. To carry out combat missions, a group of 30 athlete-climbers was sent, who worked at night at an altitude of over 122 meters. In 1944, retreating fascist troops set fire to the Ropshinsky Palace, but it was virtually undamaged and retained its original appearance.
Natural Riches: Ponds and Parks
Ropshinsky Park is adorned with three ponds, similar to natural lakes, which appeared in the 18th century: Ivanovsky, Artemyevsky, and Fabrichny. Within walking distance of Ropshinskoye Highway are Shinkarsky Pond and the English Park. The Peterhof Nature Reserve is located near the highway, offering birdwatching towers, observation decks, and eco-trails. This is a place for day trips from Saint Petersburg by car — wild nature, practically untouched by humans.
Modern Infrastructure of Ropshinskoye Highway
Ropshinskoye Highway runs from Saint Petersburg Highway to the border with the Leningrad Region in the city of Peterhof, Petrodvortsovy District of Saint Petersburg. Residential complexes have grown along the highway: "Peterhof Park," "New Peterhof," "New Quarters of Peterhof," and the cottage settlement "Knyazevo." The Ropshinsky overpass became an important element of transport infrastructure — the cost of its construction was 3.7 billion rubles.
Reconstruction and Development Plans
Currently, Ropshinskoye Highway is undergoing large-scale reconstruction. Expansion to six lanes is planned, with a project cost of 2.3 billion rubles. The project provides for a city-wide arterial street of the second class with regulated traffic. In parallel, a large-scale reconstruction of the sewerage system is underway — the work is planned to be completed by 2026. The highway will be "dug up" due to sewer repairs, which will temporarily complicate traffic, but in the long term will modernize the infrastructure.
What You Can See on the Camera
