Shepherdstown — the Oldest Town in West Virginia

Shepherdstown is located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac River. Founded in 1762, it holds the status of the oldest town in the state — here every stone bears traces of the colonial era, the Civil War, and academic tradition. The historic center of the town is a dense concentration of 18th–19th century buildings, where brick facades stand alongside wooden mansions in the Federal style. Shepherdstown webcams allow you to see this architecture in a living urban context: how the lighting changes on the streets, how the Potomac River reflects the sky, how German Street comes alive during rush hour.

German Street — the Town's Artery and a Ghost Walk Route

German Street is the main thoroughfare of Shepherdstown, lined with historic buildings, galleries, cafés, and bookstores. It is here that one of the most famous ghost walk routes in West Virginia takes place — «Shepherdstown Mystery Walks», which is part of the «WV Paranormal Trail» (the West Virginia Paranormal Trail) — a list of the 14 most haunted places in the state, approved by Governor Jim Justice in October 2023. Every house on this street holds historical testimony: from colonial times to the Civil War era.

The Civil War: A Town Turned Hospital

After the Battle of Antietam — the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War — all of Shepherdstown was turned into a field hospital. Up to 8,000 wounded soldiers from both sides were treated here, both in covered facilities and in open areas. University buildings, churches, private homes — everything was occupied as hospitals. Today, watching the town through webcams, it is hard to imagine the scale of those events, but the historic buildings remain the same space where the tragedy unfolded.

Shepherd University and McMurran Hall

Shepherd University is the academic heart of the town. McMurran Hall, towering on German Street, is the first building of the college that later became Shepherd University. After the Civil War, it housed the Jefferson County Circuit Court. The building still dominates the architectural appearance of the center and is one of the most photographed locations in the town. Student life gives Shepherdstown a special atmosphere — unhurried, intellectual, with a touch of provincial coziness.

The Potomac River and Maryland Heights Trail

The Potomac River forms the natural border between West Virginia and Maryland in the Shepherdstown area. The landscape is complemented by colonial architecture from the 18th–19th centuries, which descends to the water. One of the best viewpoints in the region is the Maryland Heights Trail within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. From the cliff, there is a panoramic view of the converging Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and the Appalachian mountain ranges. This trail is considered one of the best places for viewing the Appalachians in the region.

The Wizard Clip Legend: Mystical Heritage of the Region

The story of «Wizard Clip» is one of the most famous legends of the region. In 1794, the family of German immigrant Livingstone in the Middleway area was attacked by a poltergeist: pieces of fabric were cut off, and a voice from the sky declared a curse. This case was documented and named by Catholic priest Alfred Smith as «the most truthful ghost story ever told». Today, the site is home to the Priest Field Pastoral Center of the Catholic diocese.

Seasonal Changes in the Landscape

Shepherdstown and its surroundings change with the seasons. Fall is the most picturesque period: the parade of colors usually peaks from late September to mid-October. Local forests transform into a palette of orange, red, and gold. In spring, wildflowers bloom along the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. In winter, dense fog over the river creates an atmosphere of «old Appalachia» — it is these landscapes that attract photographers and travelers.
