History of Marathon: From Railroad to Resort

The name of this Florida Keys city was born from grueling labor. In the early 20th century, workers building the Florida East Coast Railroad called this endless project a "real marathon" — and the name stuck. Construction in the open ocean, amid hurricanes and heat, truly required marathon endurance. Marathon played a significant role during World War II, when military facilities were located here. Today it's a quiet resort town where life flows with the rhythm of tides, and Marathon Florida webcams allow you to watch this tranquility from anywhere in the world.

Seven Mile Bridge — The Main Attraction

The city's calling card is the legendary Seven Mile Bridge. Despite its name, its actual length is 35,862 feet (10,931 m), or about 6.79 miles. It's a box girder of prestressed concrete crossing one of the most scenic waterways where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico. The average water depth here is 3 to 6 meters. The new bridge was built from 1979 to 1982, while the old one, part of Henry Flagler's Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad from 1912, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of the old bridge was extremely difficult: steel beams were laid on concrete piers anchored to bedrock at depths up to 28 feet (8.5 m) below water level. You can watch this engineering masterpiece in real time through Marathon webcams — sunset views are especially impressive.

Sea Turtle Hospital: Rescue in a Former Motel

One of Marathon's most unusual attractions is The Turtle Hospital, the world's first licensed veterinary hospital for sea turtles. Here they rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured animals back into the wild. Amazingly, the hospital is located on the grounds of a former motel — the former rooms now serve as rehabilitation wards for marine inhabitants. This place is worth visiting in person to see how they care for green and loggerhead turtles injured by boat strikes or plastic ingestion.

Tarpon Fishing and the Underwater World of Looe Key Reef

Marathon has earned the title of "World Tarpon Fishing Capital". Tarpon — the "Silver King of the Keys" — is one of the most challenging and prestigious trophies for sport fishing. World-class sport fishing is available here on the reef and flats, as well as on bridges and in nearby Everglades National Park. The place is valued for not being overcrowded like other parts of Florida, making the fishing experience more authentic. For divers and snorkelers, the Looe Key coral reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is of interest. Here you can explore reefs and the 210-foot (about 64 m) sunken ship Adolphus Busch.

Climate and Nature of the Florida Keys

Marathon is located in a subtropical climate where warm weather persists almost year-round. The city is surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, creating a unique ecosystem. Mangrove thickets, sandy beaches, coral reefs — all this forms a landscape that attracts tourists from around the world. The views are especially beautiful at dawn, when the city is just waking up and fishermen head out to sea.
