Hampton is one of those cities where American history is felt at every step. Founded in 1607, it is among the oldest settlements in the country and still preserves the spirit of the colonial past mixed with the rhythm of a modern port city. Watching webcams online is an opportunity to see how the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay meet the concrete walls of Fort Monroe, and the Old Point Comfort lighthouse still guides ships.

History of Hampton: from the first settlement to the present day

Hampton is an independent city, not part of any county, which is itself a rarity for Virginia. Its founding in 1607 coincided with the arrival of the first English colonists in Newport News, and since then the city has witnessed key events in American history. Hampton Roads harbor has always been of strategic importance: located at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, it controls access to the inner parts of the bay and harbor system. It was here in 1619 that the first Africans landed, beginning the dark chapter of slavery in America, and two centuries later Fort Monroe would become a "beacon of freedom" for thousands of fugitives.

Fort Monroe — a stone fortress with a destiny

Fort Monroe is the largest stone fort in the USA, completed in 1819. Unlike many Southern fortifications, it remained under Union control throughout the Civil War. It was here that slaves fled upon hearing of General Butler's proclamation declaring them "contraband of war." President Abraham Lincoln arrived at Fort Monroe in 1862 to personally observe the Union capture of Norfolk. Today the national monument is open to visitors, and webcams allow you to see its walls and water-filled moat in real time.

Old Point Comfort Lighthouse: light over the bay

Old Point Comfort Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay and the oldest still-operating lighthouse in the bay. Built in 1802 by order of President Thomas Jefferson, it was originally wooden, but in 1823 it was replaced by a 54-foot (about 16.5 m) brick tower. During the Civil War, the lighthouse served as a "beacon of freedom" for slaves fleeing to Fort Monroe and as a guide for Union ships. Today it stands at Point Comfort, illuminating the entrance to Hampton Roads harbor.

Beaches and nature of the Chesapeake Bay

Hampton offers free beach access: Buckroe Beach, Grandview Nature Preserve, and Outlook Beach. Grandview Nature Preserve spans more than 475 acres of salt marshes, tidal creeks, and Chesapeake Bay shoreline — an ideal place for birdwatching, beachcombing, photography, and fishing. Dolphins inhabit the bay off Hampton's shores, and salt marshes serve as habitat for migratory birds. The Hampton River flows through the city and is part of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem with salt marshes and tidal creeks.

Hampton Roads harbor: strategic port

Hampton Roads harbor is a strategic defensive position at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, controlling access to the inner parts of the bay and harbor system. The port continues to play an important role in the regional economy, serving both commercial vessels and the Navy. Ship traffic can be observed through webcams installed in the port area.

Cultural life and attractions

Hampton's main attractions include Fort Monroe (national monument), the Virginia Air and Space Center, and the Casemate Museum. The Virginia Air and Space Center is NASA's official museum in Hampton, where you can see the original lunar module and learn about the city's contribution to space exploration. The Casemate Museum inside Fort Monroe tells the military history of the fortress from colonial times to World War II.

What the cameras show

Hampton webcams online offer the opportunity to see the city from different angles. Beach cameras show the Chesapeake Bay and shoreline, port broadcasts show ship traffic in Hampton Roads harbor, and cameras in the historic center allow you to observe city life in real time. Live streaming is available for free and without registration — just choose the angle you're interested in and enjoy the view of one of America's oldest cities.
