Brevard — A Mountain Town in the Heart of North Carolina

Brevard is located in western North Carolina, in Transylvania County, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This town, covering about 6.5 square miles, attracts travelers with a unique combination of mountain nature, historic architecture, and an unusual attraction — melanistic squirrels that have become the symbol of Brevard. According to the 2020 census, the city's population is 7,744 people, and 32,986 residents live throughout Transylvania County.

The city was founded in 1861 as the county seat of Transylvania County, which was formed from territories of Henderson and Jackson counties. The county's name comes from the Latin expression «trans silva» — «across the forest», reflecting the territory's location on the other side of the forest from the first European settlers. Before the arrival of Europeans, these lands were inhabited by the Cherokee, who used the Estatoe Path trade route connecting Transylvania County with South Carolina.

History of Brevard: From Border Conflicts to the Railroad

The territory of modern Brevard was the site of a border conflict between North Carolina and Georgia in 1804, known as the «Walton War». This boundary dispute was not resolved until 1807. Transylvania County was officially established in 1861, and Brevard immediately became its county seat.

The city's growth accelerated after the railroad line was connected in 1895, which opened access to markets and attracted new residents. By 1913, the main streets of Brevard had been paved, and a commercial district was forming in the city center that has survived to this day. The Transylvania County Courthouse, built in 1881, remains an architectural dominant of downtown.

Downtown Brevard: Historic District with Squirrels on Lampposts

Downtown Brevard is the Main Street Historic District, a national historic district comprising 32 historic buildings constructed between 1874 and 1952. The compact pedestrian city center is filled with independent shops, local artist galleries, and restaurants with mountain character.

Main Street and adjacent blocks are decorated with squirrel figures on lampposts — a tribute to the city's unofficial symbol. The district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, emphasizing its architectural and cultural value. The Transylvania County Courthouse, towering in the center of downtown, was built in 1881 and is one of the oldest public buildings in the region.

Brevard's Squirrels: Not Albino, but Melanistic

Brevard's squirrels are one of the city's most unusual attractions. Contrary to popular belief, these are not albino squirrels, but a melanistic variation of the eastern gray squirrel with white fur and dark eyes. A stable population of these animals inhabits the territory of Brevard College along the creek.

According to legend, the ancestors of the local squirrels are descendants of circus animals that escaped in 1949 when a circus truck overturned. One of the escaped squirrels named Snowflake became the matriarch of the population. Each fall, volunteers conduct the White Squirrel Count — a squirrel census to monitor the population's status.

Land of Waterfalls: Nature Around Brevard

Brevard is called the «Land of Waterfalls», because Transylvania County is home to more than 250 waterfalls within a 30-mile radius of the city. This makes Brevard an ideal base for hiking enthusiasts and nature photographers.

Unique natural attractions include Pisgah National Forest, one of the oldest national forests on the East Coast of the United States, as well as Bracken Preserve — 400 acres of hilly forest with hiking trails. In total, more than 1,000 miles of trails have been laid in Transylvania County, making the region a true paradise for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.

Cultural Life: Brevard Music Center and Brevard College

Brevard is not only a natural but also a cultural center of the region. Brevard Music Center was founded in 1936 as Transylvania Music Camp and is located on a 180-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Each year, a summer institute and festival are held here, attended by about 700 students aged 14 and older.

In 1964, the open-air Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium with 1,800 seats was opened, and in 1966 the center welcomed its first international students from Central America. The Brevard Music Center campus is located on the territory of Pisgah National Forest, creating a unique atmosphere for music education.

Brevard College — a private liberal arts college founded in 1853 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The college is named after Ephraim Brevard — a teacher and one of the authors of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence of 1775. The university unites three earlier institutions and offers liberal arts programs in a mountainous setting.

Climate and Natural Conditions of Brevard

Brevard is located at an altitude of about 2,200 feet above sea level in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which determines its moderate mountain climate. In summer, it is cooler here than in the lowland areas of North Carolina, and in winter, snowfalls are possible. The mountain terrain creates unique conditions for vegetation — both deciduous and coniferous forests characteristic of the Appalachians grow here.

Thanks to its location in Pisgah National Forest and proximity to numerous waterfalls, Brevard attracts tourists year-round. In spring and summer, the city is surrounded by lush greenery, and in fall the mountains are painted in golden and crimson tones, creating picturesque landscapes.
