History of Falkenberg: from Danish fortress to seaside resort

The town's name literally translates as "Hawk Mountain" — from the ancient roots falk (falcon) and berg (mountain). The settlement grew around a Danish fortress from the early 13th century, first mentioned in 1298 as Falkeberg. The fortress gave its name to the town, which was previously called Åtraby. In the 1350s, King Magnus Eriksson granted these lands to Duke Bengt Algotsson of Halland, and in 1356 the fortification was destroyed by Erik Magnusson during a feudal campaign.
