0 camerasHistory of Solnechnogorsk: from village to Moscow region town
Solnechnogorsk began as a small settlement on a hilly bank between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The first mention dates back to 1748, and by 1767 the village of Solnechnaya Gora was officially established. The settlement received town status in 1938, transforming from a quiet roadside village into an industrial center of the Moscow region.
The most important roads of the Russian Empire passed through Solnechnogorsk — the St. Petersburg Highway connected the two capitals, and the village became a resting place for travelers. The waystation palace, built for imperial visits, recalls the times when all of noble Russia traveled along this road.
Why Solnechnaya Gora: legends about the name
The most famous story is connected with Catherine the Great. According to legend, the empress approached the village early in the morning and saw the sun rising over the hills. Delighted by the view, she supposedly exclaimed: "My God, what a sunny mountain!" — thus the village got its poetic name.
However, documents tell a different story: the name Solnechnaya Gora was recorded even before the empress's visit. The phrase is uncharacteristic of Russian geographical tradition — other forms were usually used. This emphasizes that the name was born from admiration of the local landscape, and the legend about Catherine merely cemented it in popular memory.
Lake Senezh: the largest lake in the Moscow region
Solnechnogorsk is unique in being the only city in the Moscow region with a lake within its boundaries. Senezh is a glacial lake created almost 200 years ago as a reservoir to feed the Catherine Canal between the Sestra and Istra rivers.
Senezh is shrouded in legends. They say that even Dmitri Mendeleev could not find its bottom — the lake earned the nickname "bottomless." The artist Isaac Levitan, who lived nearby, joked about "crocodiles" in Senezh — most likely referring to large pike. The embankment with a lighthouse has become a favorite recreation spot for locals and visitors.
Boblovo Estate: Mendeleev and Blok
In the vicinity of Solnechnogorsk lies the Boblovo estate — the former estate of the great chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev. After his marriage, the scientist divided the estate: the children from his first marriage received the old house and park, and the new family received a part called "The Estate under the Oak."
In 1981, the State Memorial Museum-Reserve of D.I. Mendeleev and A.A. Blok was established here. The territory covers 307 hectares and unites three estates: Shakhmatovo, Tarakanovo, and Boblovo. It was in Boblovo that Alexander Blok met his future wife Lyubov Mendeleeva — the daughter of the author of the periodic table.
Attractions of Solnechnogorsk
The city is rich in monuments and places that tell of its centuries-long history. The waystation palace recalls the construction of the St. Petersburg Highway and imperial journeys. Near the city beach, an unusual monument was installed in 2008 — a woman sitting on a boulder wearing a headscarf, which locals call the Solnechnogorsk mermaid.
The lilac alley on the territory of the "Lepse" plant was laid out in 1976 in honor of veterans. Since 1993, the Lilac Festival has been held here — a tradition that has turned an industrial zone into a place of blooming and spring walks.
Monument "The Guard's Field" and military memory
In Solnechnogorsk, the memory of the Great Patriotic War is sacredly preserved. The monument "The Guard's Field" is a composition of two polished stone blocks with images of a Soviet woman and a soldier. A screen is built into the central part, on which the names of Solnechnogorsk residents drafted to the front slowly scroll.
In the urban district there are 37 military burial sites and more than 60 memorial signs. The monument "Grieving Mother" on Leningradskoye Highway stands next to the Eternal Flame and the names of the fallen. The memorial stele "Solnechnogorsk — City of Military Valor" was unveiled on December 2.
