History of Lysva: from factory to City of Labor Valor

Lysva is a city with deep metallurgical roots. It grew from a factory settlement, founded in 1785, when Princess Varvara Shakhovskaya received permission to build a cast iron smelting plant. Lysva officially gained city status much later — only in 1926. Today it is the fifth city in the Urals by industrial output, which in 2021 was awarded the honorary title of "City of Labor Valor".

Red Square and the legacy of the Lysva helmet

The main square of Lysva is Red Square. In 1967, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial was opened here. One of the symbols of the main monument of the country, crowning the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, became the Lysva helmet. Since 1942, Lysva became the only city where helmets for Red Army soldiers were produced, and until 1978 they were in service with the Soviet Army, exported to 14 countries worldwide. That is why Lysva is often called the "birthplace of the helmet".

Shakhovskaya Embankment and the city pond

The heart of Lysva is a large pond formed on the Lysva River, in the very valley of which the city is located. One of the main public spaces and a popular walking spot became Shakhovskaya Embankment. In 1915, a building in Art Nouveau style appeared here, built on the site of its predecessor that burned down in 1914. This building is an architectural monument and adorns the central part of the city.

Chusovaya River: nature and active recreation

Lysva is located 86 kilometers from Perm, in the east of the Perm Krai, and covers an area of 26.44 km². But in addition to urban development, an important part of the region is the Chusovaya River, flowing through the Perm Krai. Unique natural complexes have been preserved in its basin: vast forest arrays and century-old spruce forests. Active recreation is popular on the Chusovaya River: rafting, boat trips, fishing, and hunting. One of the most famous places is the "Chusovaya" tourist base, founded in 1934.

Industrial heritage and architecture

Lysva is called not only the "birthplace of the helmet" but also the "capital of enamel". During the Great Patriotic War, the city received four evacuated enterprises: the Moscow "Rezors" plant, the Odessa plant named after Ivanov, the Taganrog and Kosogorsk metallurgical plants. The railway station in Lysva was built in 1878 during the construction of the Ural Mining Railway, after which a metallurgical plant grew here, determining the fate of the settlement.
