0 camerasHistory of Loo: from Abazinian lands to a Black Sea resort
A small resort town on the Black Sea coast preserves the memory of peoples who lived here long before the first hotels appeared. The name Loo comes from the name of the largest Abazinian feudal clan Lau or Lou (Loovy), who owned these territories during the period of the greatest flourishing of the Abkhazian Principality according to historical data. Until 1864, the Ubykhs of the Vardane rural community lived in the Loo River valley, and on the seashore stood the aul of Ismail and Barakaya Dzepsha — one of the Ubykh leaders during the Caucasian War.
After the end of the Caucasian War, the indigenous population was deported to the Ottoman Empire during the large-scale Muhajirism. The valley remained uninhabited for several years until 1872, when Russian, Armenian, and Greek settlers began to populate the Loo River basin. The territory itself was included in the Vardane estate, which belonged to Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich. Today, Loo webcams allow you to see what this place looks like, where the fates of different peoples and eras intertwine.
Loo Temple: a medieval fortress on the mountain
One of the most mysterious attractions of the town — the ruins of a medieval Christian temple, towering on a mountain top 1.5 kilometers from the seashore. Loo Temple was built by Abkhazian architects of the 10th–12th centuries, modeled after the 11th-century Bzyb Temple located in Abkhazia. Structurally, it is a three-nave and three-apse structure belonging to cross-domed churches of the "inscribed cross" type.
The dimensions of the temple are impressive: length 20 meters, width 12.2 meters, wall thickness exceeds one meter. The temple had three entrances — from the north, west, and south, and it was illuminated by numerous narrow windows 0.4 meters wide. During excavations, fragments of greenish-blue window glass and facing blocks with traces of graffiti — individual letters of the Greek alphabet — were found. In the 14th century, the temple was restored, but it was used for liturgical purposes for a short time, and in the 15th–16th centuries it was converted into a fortress. The reason for the destruction — miscalculations of the architects who did not take into account the seismic instability of the area.
Volkonsky Dolmen and other ancient monuments
In the vicinity of Loo, traces of ancient civilizations have been preserved, attracting history and mysticism enthusiasts. Volkonsky Dolmen — the most popular stone monument, located 200 meters from the A-147 highway at an altitude of about 400 meters above sea level. This is a monolithic dolmen carved into a sandstone rock fragment: a flat platform has been cut into a huge stone, over which hangs a facade wall with an opening leading to a horseshoe-shaped chamber with a spherical ceiling.
On the roof of the dolmen there is a round depression with a diameter and depth of up to 60 centimeters. During construction, a cut was made in the monolith, and part of the stone with the dolmen was turned with the facade oriented toward the summer solstice. A romantic legend is associated with the dolmen about a young man from a noble family who fell in love with a poor girl and turned into a stone so as not to live without his beloved. His brother repented and shared his brother's fate, and the beautiful bride turned into a river with clean water that flows nearby.
Waterfalls and natural beauty of the Loo surroundings
The surroundings of Loo are famous for cascades of mountain rivers and waterfalls that attract tourists in the warm season. 33 Waterfalls on the Dzhegosh River — one of the most famous attractions, belonging to the national reserve. The highest cascade reaches over 10 meters. Viewing platforms, bridges, stairs with railings, and guide services are available for visitors. The journey should start from the village of Bolshoy Kichmay.
The "Paradise Delight" waterfall is located in the Loo River valley about 4 kilometers from the Black Sea coast. The total height of the waterfall is about 5 meters — the water falls in several steps, forming a small but deep lake with crystal-clear water at the bottom. The water temperature remains cool even on a hot summer day. Suspension bridges are equipped near the waterfall, allowing you to enjoy the views from different angles. There is a legend associated with the waterfall that its water has healing properties and can restore youth.
The Chudo-Krasotka Gorge is named after the river of the same name that flows down from the mountains. The river is ten kilometers long and one hundred and fifty meters above sea level. In addition to the river, three waterfalls are formed here: Chudo-Krasotka, Prokhladny, and Mirazh.
Microclimate and relict vegetation
The town of Loo is located on the territory of the Sochi National Park and the Caucasus Reserve, in the zone of relict flora. The humid subtropical climate with long summers and mild rainy winters creates unique conditions for recreation. The swimming season in Loo begins in the second half of May and lasts until November — one of the longest on the Black Sea coast.
Summer heat is softened by sea breezes, which alternate with the fresh mountain wind of the Caucasus Mountains. The healing aroma of beech and chestnut, southern tea plantations create a unique microclimate. Among the relict plants, there are ancient coniferous species — pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, juniper, as well as subtropical deciduous species: Caucasian oak, beech and chestnut forests. Thanks to the mild climate, they preserve their genetic characteristics and form the unique nature of Loo.
Resort life: from Soviet sanatoriums to AquaLoo water park
Loo and the surrounding areas became Soviet resorts only in the 1960s, when most of the sanatoriums and hotels were built. In 1970, the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution on the development of the sanatorium-resort network mainly through the construction of large complexes. The financial basis of the tourism and recreation boom was the growth of the population's monetary savings: for 1965–1985, the total amount of deposits in savings banks increased from 18.7 billion to more than 220 billion rubles.
The territory of Loo continues to develop at the present time. The resort town was made famous by the AquaLoo water park — one of the largest on the Black Sea coast of Russia. The main advantage of the resort is its natural resources: clean sea, picturesque landscapes, healing microclimate. Thalassotherapy, physiotherapy, SPA, massages, mud applications, electrophoresis, and salt baths are practiced here.
