Galich — an ancient city on the lake shore

Galich is one of the oldest cities in the Kostroma region, founded in 1159 under Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, located on the shore of Galich Lake. This small provincial town preserves the memory of the times when it was the center of an appanage principality and an important trade hub on the Volga route. Today Galich attracts travelers with its authentic atmosphere, old architecture, and picturesque views of the lake. Galich webcams online allow you to see this cozy town in real time without leaving home.

Galich Lake: the pearl of the Kostroma region

Galich Lake is the largest body of water in the Kostroma region, with an area of 75.4 km², a length of 17 km, and a maximum depth of 3.5 meters. The lake is about 125,000 years old — it was formed by a melted glacier and has large sapropel reserves at the bottom. The reservoir is famous for its fishing grounds and picturesque shores, which attract anglers and nature lovers from across the region. You can observe the lake via webcams — it looks especially beautiful at sunset, when the water reflects the sky in pink and gold tones.

Revolution Square and the Trading Rows

Revolution Square in Galich is the city's central square, home to the Trading Rows — a federal architectural monument in the Empire style, built in the 1820s–1830s. The Lower Trading Rows on Revolution Square were built in 1823 to a design by Kostroma provincial architect Nikolai Metlin, who took the Vegetable Rows of Kostroma as his model. Today the square remains the heart of the city — holidays, fairs, and the daily life of townspeople take place here. The camera on Revolution Square shows both the architectural ensemble and the modern life of Galich.

The Fire Lookout Tower — a symbol of the city

The fire lookout tower in Galich was built in 1899 as a two-story brick fire station building with an octagonal wooden observation tower about 4 meters high. The construction of the fire station with the lookout tower was funded by merchants and townspeople who raised 10,000 rubles, and the watchman on the tower could observe fires throughout the city. This building has become one of the symbols of Galich and serves as a reminder of how the townspeople cared about the safety of their city in the past. The view of the lookout tower from the central streets is one of the most recognizable in the city.

The Resurrection Cathedral and spiritual heritage

Construction of the Resurrection Cathedral began in 1668 funded by the donations of Tsarina Maria Ilyinichna Miloslavskaya, but after her death the cathedral stood unfinished for over 100 years and was only completed in 1792. This long journey from conception to realization reflects the complex history of the city and its spiritual life. The cathedral is an important element of Galich's architectural appearance and attracts lovers of antiquity.

The Galich Local History Museum

The Galich Local History Museum was opened on March 12, 1922, on the initiative of local historian I.V. Yablokov and is housed in the merchant Neshpanov's mansion (a building from 1914). The museum's collection comprises over 15,000 items, including artifacts of the Merya tribe, collections of traditional clothing from the 18th–19th centuries, antique weapons, furniture from noble estates, and musical instruments. The museum preserves the memory of the region's rich history — from ancient Finno-Ugric tribes to the merchant era.

Balchuk Hill and panoramic views

On Balchuk Hill (Shemyakina Mountain) in Galich, an ancient fortress once stood, and now this spot offers a view of Galich Lake. It is one of the best places to observe the city and the reservoir — from here you can see how the historic center is arranged as an amphitheater on the lake shore. Panoramic cameras on the elevated points show Galich from the best angles.
