According to one of them, the word derives from Tyghomys/Teghomys and is translated as "shady place" — a cool, shaded gorge where the sun rarely reaches. Other researchers believe that the basis is the Adyghe Deguamez — "dense forest" or Daghumaz — "good forest." Linguist V. I. Voroshilov saw the root psy — "water" or "river" — in the name and translated the toponym as "river of the Dagomuko clan" — an Ubykh princely clan that inhabited the valley until the end of the Caucasian War.

Mount Uspenskaya, which rises in the center of the settlement, is associated with one of the local legends. Allegedly, during the Russo-Turkish War, Cossack Yegor Uspensky was buried here, his body placed in a coffin with a window. The burial comrades received signals about the approaching enemy through this window and successfully repelled attacks.
