Ploiești — the oil capital of Romania

Ploiești holds a special place in the history of European industry. This Romanian city became the first place in the world where the world's first oil refinery was opened in 1857. The Mehedințeanu brothers launched production earlier than it happened in the USA, making Romania the first country with official production statistics. In the same 1857, Romania officially registered the first industrial oil production – 275 tons. From April 1, 1857, kerosene street lighting was organized in Bucharest, running on oil from Ploiești. The city is widely known as the "black gold capital" due to its long-standing connection with hydrocarbon extraction and processing.

City history from the Middle Ages to an industrial center

The city was founded in 1596 during the reign of Michael the Brave. In 1810, under Ottoman administration, the settlement was a modest locality with approximately 2,024 inhabitants. In the XVII–XVIII centuries, Ploiești became one of the centers of trade and craft production. From the mid-XIX century, Ploiești became an important oil extraction center, which determined its future destiny. According to the 1859 census, the population was 26,468; in 1899 — 45,107 inhabitants; in 1912 — 56,460; in 1930 — 77,341.

Ploiești in World War II

During World War II, the Ploiești region was the main source of oil for Nazi Germany. By 1941, Romanian wells provided Berlin with over three million tons of high-quality raw materials annually. Operation Tidal Wave on August 1, 1943, was an attempt by American troops to bomb the oil refineries in Ploiești. In August 1944, Soviet troops entered the city. These events forever inscribed Ploiești in world history as a strategic oil center.

Attractions and cultural heritage

The National Oil Museum in Ploiești — the only one of its kind in Romania, reflecting the city's history connected with the oil industry. In 1957, the centenary of the Romanian oil industry was celebrated. Oil extraction in the vicinity of Ploiești began in ancient times. The oil refining process at the first Mehedințeanu brothers' plant took place in cast-iron cylindrical vessels, heated by burning wood. Today, the city features both historic buildings of the old center and industrial facilities reminiscent of its oil past.

Geographical location and transport

Ploiești is a junction station with roads branching to Transylvania and Moldova, located 60 km north of Bucharest. The city area is 58.2 km². This location makes Ploiești a convenient transit point between the Romanian capital and the northern regions of the country. Railway connections link the city with the country's largest centers, and highways provide quick access to Carpathian passes.

Population and demographics

Currently, the city's population is about 210 thousand people. The demographic structure reflects the industrial character of the city — a significant portion of residents were historically associated with the oil industry. After the production decline in the 1990s, the population decreased somewhat, however Ploiești remains one of the largest cities in Romania and an important economic center of Prahova.

Ploiești is located in a moderately continental climate zone with distinct seasons.
