Chałupy — the pearl of the Hel Peninsula

Chałupy is a small resort village on the famous Hel Peninsula in northern Poland. Located between Władysławowo and Kuźnica, it attracts tourists with picturesque beaches and unique conditions for water sports. With a population of about 400 residents in the winter season, thousands of vacationers gather here in summer, especially windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts.

The Hel Peninsula, where Chałupy is located, is a narrow sandy strip about 35 kilometers long, jutting into the Baltic Sea and separating the shallow Puck Bay from the open sea. It is this unique geographical position that creates ideal conditions for surfing — the bay always has plenty of wind and shallow water, making Chałupy a true paradise for both beginner and experienced surfers.

History of a fishing village

Until the early 20th century, Chałupy was a typical fishing village, whose residents engaged in fishing in the waters of Puck Bay. Everything changed in 1922, when a railway line was built through the village, connecting Władysławowo with Hel. Gradually, the fishing village began to transform into a popular seaside resort.

Today, Chałupy is a modern resort with developed infrastructure, numerous surf schools, campsites, and hotels. However, the village has preserved its unique character — there are no high-rise buildings here, and the architecture blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape.

Surfing and water sports

Chałupy is rightfully considered one of the best places in Europe for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The shallow Puck Bay with steady wind creates ideal conditions for both beginners and professionals. The village has many surf schools where you can take lessons or rent equipment.

In addition to surfing, Chałupy offers other water activities: kayaking, swimming, and yacht trips. In the summer season, the village beaches are always crowded, and in the evening tourists gather in local restaurants and cafes to enjoy fresh fish and beautiful sunsets over the bay.

Natural attractions

Chałupy is surrounded by unique nature. On one side of the village stretches the shallow Puck Bay with warm water, on the other — the open Baltic Sea with sandy dunes and beaches. Along the entire Hel Peninsula stretches a strip of pine forests where you can take walks and cycling trips.

Special attention deserves the bird colonies on the outskirts of the village — rare bird species nest here, and during migration season you can observe migratory birds. For nature lovers, Chałupy is a true paradise where you can combine active recreation with wildlife observation.

Infrastructure and accommodation

Despite its small size, Chałupy offers various accommodation options. There are both comfortable hotels and cozy guest houses, campsites right on the bay shore. Many tourists choose campsites — this allows you to be closer to nature and surf spots.

The village has shops, restaurants, and surf equipment rental points. The Chałupy railway station connects the village with Władysławowo and Hel, making it a convenient base for exploring the entire Hel Peninsula.

Climate and best time to visit

The climate in Chałupy is maritime, with mild winters and cool summers. The best time for surfing is from May to September, when the wind is most stable and the water in the bay warms up to a comfortable temperature. However, even in winter, Chałupy attracts tourists with its quiet atmosphere and beautiful winter landscapes.

In the summer season, the air temperature is usually 20-25°C, the water in Puck Bay warms up to 18-20°C. Thanks to the shallow water, the water here is always warmer than in the open sea, making the bay an ideal place for family vacations with children.

How to get to Chałupy

Chałupy is located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, about 8 km from Władysławowo. You can get here by train — the railway line runs right through the village, the Chałupy station is connected to Władysławowo and Hel. By car from Gdańsk, the journey takes about an hour along a scenic road along the coast.

In the summer season, buses run between the resorts of the Hel Peninsula, making Chałupy a convenient starting point for exploring the entire peninsula — from Władysławowo to Hel.
