Ełk — the gateway to Masuria on the shore of a glacial lake

Ełk is a city in northeastern Poland, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, often called the unofficial capital of Masuria. It sits on the shore of Ełk Lake — one of the largest and deepest bodies of water in the region. The city combines medieval Teutonic Order history, Prussian heritage, and modern Polish atmosphere. If you're planning a trip or just want to feel the rhythm of this place, Ełk webcams online let you see the city in real time — from the promenade to the market square.

Origin of the name: white water lily on the lake

The name "Ełk" has deep roots going back to the pre-Christian era. It comes from the earlier name of the village Łek / Łęk, derived from the Yatvingian (Prussian) language, where "łek" means "white water lily" — an aquatic plant that grew abundantly in the surrounding waters. This poetic name reflects the city's close connection with the lake landscape that has shaped its appearance for more than six centuries. The Yatvingians — a Baltic people who inhabited these lands before the arrival of the crusaders — left behind not only toponymy but also the very idea of a settlement at the crossroads of waterways.

Teutonic Castle and medieval heritage

The heart of historic Ełk is the castle, built as a small Teutonic fortress on the initiative of Ulrich von Jungingen, commander of Balga and later Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Construction took place in 1398–1406 under the direction of Nicholas von Fellenstein. The castle had a rectangular plan of stone and brick measuring 49×70 m and consisted of two buildings: the main castle and a residential outbuilding. The corners were reinforced with three cylindrical and one square tower. Today the castle is one of the city's landmarks, and Ełk webcams allow you to see its walls and surroundings at any time of day.

Ełk Lake: a glacial giant 55.8 meters deep

Ełk Lake (Jezioro Ełckie) is the city's main natural attraction and one of the most impressive bodies of water in Masuria. The lake was formed by glacial activity and has a maximum surface area of 385 ha, an average depth of 15 m, and a maximum depth of 55.8 m. This makes it one of the deepest lakes in the region. On the shore of the lake lies the promenade — a favorite walking spot for locals and tourists. The view from the Ełk webcam opens up a panorama of the water surface, which changes color depending on the weather and time of day — from steel gray in winter to turquoise in summer.

Narrow-gauge railway: a journey into the past

One of Ełk's unique attractions is the historical 750 mm narrow-gauge railway, built in 1912–1918. It is one of the few operating historical narrow-gauge lines in Poland. Regular service on it was suspended in 2021, but the line retains its status as a tourist attraction and a monument of engineering architecture. The Historical Museum in Ełk (Muzeum Historyczne w Ełku) has been located since 2018 in the historic building of the former narrow-gauge railway station in the reconstructed area. Visitors can see old railway equipment and learn about the role of the narrow-gauge railway in the life of the region.

Mickiewicz Square and the city center

Ełk's market square — Plac Adama Mickiewicza — is the center of city life. It features cafes, shops, administrative buildings, and a church. The square is surrounded by historic buildings that were restored after the destruction of World War II. Ełk webcams in the city center show everyday life: pedestrians, cyclists, street musicians. This is where tourist routes and local traditions intersect — fairs, festivals, and public events take place here.

Church and religious heritage

Ełk is a city with a rich religious history. It has preserved churches of different denominations, reflecting the region's multinational past. The Church of St. Mary and other religious buildings form the architectural silhouette of the city. Bell towers and spires are visible from many points in Ełk, and webcams on the promenade often capture them against the backdrop of the lake landscape. Religious holidays and processions remain part of the city's calendar, attracting both locals and visitors.

Masurian landscape and nature around Ełk

Ełk is surrounded by a typical Masurian landscape — hills, forests, lakes, and rivers. It is a popular destination for hiking and cycling tourism, fishing, and water sports. Tourist routes lead to observation decks and nature reserves in the surrounding area. Ełk webcams online allow you to assess weather conditions before your trip: see if there is snow on the slopes, what the visibility is like on the lake, and how busy the streets are on a particular day.
