Discover the most amazing corner of Sardinia — the town of Buggerru, where Stone Age history meets the industrial grandeur of the 19th century. This jewel of southwestern Sardinia is a place that attracts travelers with its unique combination of seaside, former mines, and dynamic sea.
Why Buggerru is called the "Little Paris" of Sardinia
This is not just a beautiful nickname — it reflects the special atmosphere of the town. Once upon a time, on the coast of southwestern Sardinia, there existed infrastructure that seemed impossible in the region at that time. Electricity, hospitals, schools — all this was a sign of achievements that are impressive even today. The town seems to grow on the hills, spreading from the Church of San Giovanni Battista along picturesque slopes.
History of Buggerru: from mining village to industrial legend
Founded in 1864 as a mining village, Buggerru was born from the decision of a French engineer who received permission to search for lead and zinc in the region's caves. From the very beginning, Buggerru was closely connected with the mining industry, developing alongside it. The Cagliari port authority allowed the Malfidano company to build six calamine roasting furnaces on the beach spit, opening new opportunities for the town.
Particularly telling are the historical dates — on August 28, 1868, the construction of production facilities was permitted, and already on October 12, 1880, the prefect of Iglesias authorized the construction of Laveria Buggerru — a factory with advanced equipment that produced up to 40-50 tons of calamine per day with a content of more than 40% pure metal. This made the town one of the leading centers of mining and processing in Sardinia.
Geography and location of Buggerru
The location of the town was strategically chosen for a reason — being a municipality in the province of Sulcis-Iglesiente, it is located approximately 70 km northwest of Cagliari and 30 km northwest of Carbonia. Such a location made it possible to develop not only mining activities but also sea trade routes, providing the town with a connection to the outside world.
Population and current state of Buggerru
Today, the population of Buggerru is about 1,000 residents. This is a decrease compared to the last century, when the town was famous for its developed infrastructure, including management residential buildings, office buildings, and a full-fledged medical service. Unfortunately, many of these historical buildings have been lost or destroyed, but part of the town still retains its architectural appeal.
Nature of Buggerru and the sea coast
One of the most attractive features of Buggerru is its sea harbor and beaches. The beach of Spiaggia di San Nicolò is about 3 km of golden sand with impressive dunes, connecting the municipality of Buggerru with the village of Portixeddu. These dunes rise high, and behind them lies a magnificent area of pine plantations — an ideal place for relaxation and walks. Coastal tourist trails allow you to observe sea caves and the rugged coastline.

This recognition of the unique value of this region, where thousands of years ago millions of tons of minerals were extracted.
