Novalja is a town where ancient history meets modern resort life. Located in the northern part of the island of Pag in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, it attracts tourists not only with its beaches but also with a unique atmosphere shaped by rocky landscapes, crystal-clear water, and rich cultural heritage. The town's coordinates are 44.55°N, 14.88°E, and it is here that you can observe the life of the resort through webcams in real time.

Geographical Location and Climate

Novalja is located in Lika-Senj County, Croatia, occupying the northern part of the island of Pag. This island is the eighth largest in the country with an area of 284.56 km² and a population of about 8,398 people. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making Novalja easily accessible for travelers.

The climate here is Mediterranean, but with its own peculiarities: the strong bura wind blowing from the mainland creates a characteristic "lunar landscape" — a rocky, almost treeless surface. In summer, air temperatures reach +30°C, and the water warms up to +25°C. Thanks to this, the swimming season lasts from May to October.

History of Novalja: from Cissa to the Present Day

Novalja is a town with an ancient history. It originated on the site of the Roman settlement of Cissa, which was founded in the 1st century BC and served as the seat of an early Christian bishopric. Archaeological excavations in the vicinity of the modern town uncover fragments of Roman buildings, mosaics, and ceramics.

In the Middle Ages, Novalja changed hands repeatedly: first it belonged to Croatian-Hungarian rulers, and from the 14th century — to the Venetian Republic. The Venetians controlled the island until the end of the 18th century, leaving behind fortifications and architectural monuments. After World War I, Novalja became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and since 1991 — of independent Croatia.

Zrće Beach and Resort Life

The main attraction of Novalja is Zrće Beach, located 2 km from the town. This pebble beach with crystal-clear water is recognized as one of the best party destinations in Croatia. In summer, electronic music festivals are held here, and open-air clubs operate until dawn.

But Novalja is not just about parties. The town also offers a peaceful family holiday: cozy bays, excursion boats, restaurants with local cuisine. The town's promenade is lined with cafés and shops, and the port serves as a starting point for excursions around the Adriatic.

Cultural Heritage of the Island of Pag

The island of Pag is famous for its crafts. The main one is Paška čipka (Pag lace), which was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. This unique craft is distinguished by its geometric patterns and is made from flax. In Novalja, you can watch artisans create these works of art.

Another symbol of the island is Paški sir (Pag cheese), which is made from sheep's milk using traditional recipes. The sheep graze on salty pastures, which gives the cheese its distinctive flavor. In local shops and restaurants, this cheese is a must-have menu item.

Natural Features and Landscapes

The landscape of Novalja and the island of Pag is unique. Strong winds and an arid climate have created the so-called "lunar landscape" — a rocky, almost barren surface. This makes the island resemble a Martian landscape, especially in the southern part.

But there are also green oases: olive groves, vineyards, and pine forests near the beaches. The Adriatic Sea off the coast of Novalja is famous for its transparency — underwater visibility reaches 20 meters. This attracts divers and snorkelers.

What to See in Novalja

In addition to the beaches, the town has several interesting places. The ruins of ancient Cissa are located in the Caska area, a few kilometers from Novalja. Remains of an aqueduct and foundations of Roman buildings have been preserved there.

In the town itself, it is worth visiting the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (Crkva Marijina Navještenja), the old town walls, and the archaeological museum, which displays artifacts from the Roman period. The Novalja promenade is an ideal place for evening walks as the sun sets over the Adriatic.

What the Cameras Show

Novalja webcams allow you to observe the life of the resort in real time. The cameras are installed at key locations: on the promenade, in the port, at Zrće Beach, and in the old town area. Through them, you can see the sunset over the Adriatic, the movement of yachts in the harbor, tourists on the promenade, and the party atmosphere at Zrće.

The live stream from the webcams is available free of charge and without registration. It is a convenient way to plan a trip, assess the weather on site, or simply enjoy the views of the Croatian coast from the comfort of your home. The quality of the broadcast allows you to see the details: from the architecture of old buildings to the yacht piers.
