History of Fažana: from Roman Colony to Fishing Capital

A small town on the western coast of Istria preserves the memory of a great empire. Fažana in Roman times was called Vasianum, then Phasiana — the name derives from the production of ceramics and terracotta: vases, roof tiles, and amphorae were made here when Istria was an important Roman province. Archaeologists find remains of ceramic workshops that supplied the entire Adriatic.

The town quickly turned into a thriving center. Roman patricians built villas and country residences here, enjoying the mild climate and convenient harbor. Fažana became an important economic hub of the region — goods from the interior of the peninsula passed through its port to the coast.

Centuries later, the town did not lose its significance. In 1741, Fažana had 503 inhabitants — for comparison, the neighboring Pula at that time had only 700 residents. This shows that even in the relatively recent past, Fažana was one of the largest settlements in Istria.

Architectural Heritage: Venetian Facades and Gothic Churches

A walk through the streets of Fažana is a journey through the ages. Venetian buildings with colorful facades stand alongside older structures, creating a unique architectural ensemble. Every house here seems to tell the story of its owners — fishermen, merchants, craftsmen.

The main landmark of the old town is the Parish Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. This is a single-nave Gothic structure that later acquired Baroque elements. A Gothic portal has been preserved on the façade — evidence of Fažana's medieval past. Inside the church, you can see ancient frescoes and altars characteristic of Istrian religious architecture.

The narrow alleys of the historic center lead to the waterfront, where trade in fish and olive oil once thrived. Today, cozy cafes and restaurants are located here, but the atmosphere of an ancient port town is still felt.

Olive Oil and Gastronomy: the Taste of Istria

Istrian cuisine is a separate reason to visit Fažana. In Roman times, the town was famous for producing the finest olive oil, and remains of ancient oil presses are still found during excavations. Olive growing has been part of Fažana's identity for over two millennia.

The Fažanski Olivari theme park tells the story of the centuries-old tradition of olive cultivation. Here you can see trees that are hundreds of years old and learn how oil production methods have changed from antiquity to the present day. Local varieties — Buža, Roščanka, Istarska Belica — yield oil with a unique flavor, highly appreciated by gourmets worldwide.

But the main gastronomic treasure of Fažana is fish. Sardines are prepared here in more than a hundred ways: grilled, marinated, salted, baked with herbs. They are served traditionally — with a glass of local Malvasia, a white wine that perfectly complements seafood.

Fažana — Gateway to Brijuni: Maritime Adventures

One of the main reasons tourists choose Fažana is its location. The Brijuni islands lie directly in front of the town, and Fažana is rightly called the 'Gateway to Brijuni'. The national park with its wildlife, safari park, and Rovinj ruins begins literally a few minutes from the shore.

Boats to Brijuni depart from Fažana several times a day and reach the park in just 20 minutes. This makes the town an ideal base for day trips to the islands. You can head out on an excursion in the morning and return to a cozy hotel in the evening and have fresh fish for dinner on the waterfront.

Fažana's harbor itself is picturesque: colorful fishing boats, seagulls at the piers, the smell of the sea and pine trees. A promenade stretches along the waterfront, pleasant for walking at any time of day.

Legends and Myths of the Town

Fažana is shrouded in legends passed down from generation to generation. The Castle and the Abyss (Pazin's Pit) allegedly inspired Jules Verne to write the novel 'Mathias Sandorf'. The writer set the plot of his work in these very places, and today excursions to Pazin Castle often include tales about the possible prototypes of Verne's characters.

Another legend is connected to the town's topography. According to legend, the former La Rondinella street was so narrow that only swallows could fly through it. The name of the street translates exactly as 'swallow.' Today these alleys have become wider, but still retain their medieval character.

Local residents also share maritime omens: if seagulls cry especially loudly — expect a storm, and if fishermen see dolphins in the morning — the day will be lucky for fishing. These beliefs have lived in Fažana for at least two thousand years.

Fishing Traditions: a Town That Lives by the Sea

Fishing has shaped Fažana's destiny throughout its entire history. Already in Roman times, fishing was an important feature of the town, and this tradition has not been interrupted for a single century. Today, fishing vessels can still be seen in the harbor, heading out to sea at dawn and returning with their catch by noon.

The centerpiece of Fažana's cuisine is the sardine. It is fried, smoked, marinated, added to pasta and risotto. Every restaurant has its own signature recipe, and arguing over whose sardine is tastier is a favorite pastime of local gourmets. But everyone agrees on one thing: without a glass of chilled Malvasia, this dish does not reveal its full flavor.

Fishermen's festivals and events are an integral part of life in Fažana. In summer, tastings are held on the waterfront where you can try dozens of types of fish and seafood prepared according to ancient recipes.
