Venetian heritage and architectural character of Corfu

The city of Corfu (Kerkyra) is a place where the architectural styles of four eras have merged into a unique urban landscape. The architecture of Corfu's Old Town bears clear Venetian influence from the period of the Venetian Republic's rule (1386–1797), including narrow streets (kantounia). These winding passages, paved with stones once walked by doges and merchants, are now filled with tourists, cafés, and olive soap shops. The historic center of Corfu is bounded by two fortresses — the Old and the New — and is included in the UNESCO World List for its unique architecture combining Venetian, French, and British influences. You can observe the life of this medieval labyrinth through Corfu webcams online — they convey the rhythm of the city in real time, from morning coffee on the squares to evening strolls along the waterfront.

Church of Saint Spyridon — the heart of the island

The red dome of the Church of Saint Spyridon is the first thing travelers see when arriving at Corfu by sea. The bell tower of the Church of Saint Spyridon is the tallest among all the churches of Corfu, and its silhouette has become the symbol of the island. The bell tower dates to 1590 and is stylistically similar to the bell tower of Saint George of the Greeks in Venice — this is no coincidence, as Corfu belonged to the Venetian Republic for more than four centuries. The sanctuary houses a golden shrine with the relics of Saint Spyridon, which is visited by many pilgrims every year. After Corfu was saved from the Ottoman siege on August 11, 1716 (thanks to the intercession of Saint Spyridon), Governor Andrea Pisani erected the church in gratitude to the saint. Today, the Corfu webcam aimed at the square in front of the church shows how locals and pilgrims come here throughout the day.

Old Fortress and Esplanada: fortification and public life

The Old Fortress is a masterpiece of military architecture, rising on a rocky promontory between two harbors. The name "Corfu" (Corypho) comes from the Greek "coryphe" (peak) and is connected to the double peaks on which the Old Fortress stands. The entrance to the fortress is located directly opposite Liston Square and is accessed via a short bridge. At the top, on the summit of the fortress, a panoramic view opens up over the entire city of Corfu, the Ionian Sea, and the coast of Albania. At the foot of the fortress stretches the Esplanada (Spianada) — the largest square in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Here locals play cricket — a legacy of the British protectorate of the 19th century. Liston Square, adjacent to the Esplanada, is an example of French architecture from the early 19th century, built by order of Napoleon after 1807 and reminiscent of Paris's Rue de Rivoli. The name "Liston" has Venetian origins — from the word "Lista" (list/register), which in former Venetian territories designated a square or part of it; the expression "far el liston" means "to stroll along the square."

Achilleion Palace — imperial residence among cypresses

In the village of Gastouri, 10 km south of Corfu town, among evergreen cypresses and olive groves stands the Achilleion Palace. The Achilleion Palace was built in 1890 specifically for the Empress of Austria Elisabeth (Sissy) and served as her favorite summer residence. The architectural style of the Achilleion is conceived as a recreation of an ancient palace, located in the village of Gastouri 10 km south of Corfu town and offering a panoramic view of the city and the Ionian Sea. The empress, known for her love of ancient Greek culture, decorated the gardens with sculptures of Achilles and other mythological heroes. After her death in 1898, the palace was acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II, who added the famous bronze statue of the Triumphant Achilles. Today the Achilleion is a museum, and Corfu webcams installed in Gastouri allow you to see the park alleys and the sea panorama that so captivated Sissy.

Paleokastritsa and myths of ancient Greece

On the northwest coast of the island, 25 km from Corfu town, lies Paleokastritsa Bay — one of the most picturesque places of the Ionian Sea. Paleokastritsa is located 25 km northwest of Corfu town, and its name translates as "Old Little Castle" (a reference to the nearby Angelokastro). Corfu is a likely candidate for the role of the mythical island of the Phaeacians from Homer's "Odyssey" (where Nausicaa met Odysseus). Above the bay, on a rocky cliff, rises the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Paleokastritsa. The Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Paleokastritsa was founded in 1225, and the buildings that visitors see today date from the Ottoman Empire era (17th century). According to local legend, anyone who throws coins into the well in the upper courtyard of the Paleokastritsa monastery will surely return to Corfu. The Paleokastritsa Monastery is the largest monastery on the island and one of the main pilgrimage centers: two miraculous icons are kept here. The online broadcast from the Corfu webcam in this area shows the azure waters of the bay and the green slopes descending into the sea.

Kanoni Port and Vlacherna Monastery

The southern tip of the Kanoni peninsula is where the most photographed views of Corfu are concentrated. The Vlacherna Monastery is located on a small island off the coast of Kanoni, connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge, and is a 17th-century monument. The snow-white church on a tiny island, surrounded by the sea, has become the calling card of the island. Nearby, on the Kanoni cape, is another shrine — the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Vlacherna, and in the coastal waters you can see the islet of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), according to legend — Odysseus's ship turned into a rock by Poseidon. The port of Corfu (Kerkyra) is one of the main cruise ports of the Ionian Islands, from which you can walk to the Old Town. Cruise liners, yachts, and ferries continuously dock at the piers, creating a lively seascape. Corfu webcams at the port and Kanoni convey this dynamic — from the arrival of the next cruise giant to sunsets painting the water in golden hues.

What the cameras show in the city

Corfu webcams cover key points of the island: from the historic center of Kerkyra with its Venetian streets to beach resorts and mountain villages. For those who want to see the island's nature, Corfu webcams are available in Paleokastritsa and around the Achilleion. All broadcasts operate in real time and allow you to assess the weather, sea, and atmosphere of the island before your trip or simply for a virtual walk through one of the most beautiful cities in Greece.
