History and Origin of the Name

Chenggong is a small town in Taitung County on the east coast of Taiwan, whose life is inseparably connected with the sea. The name Chenggong (成功) was given to the town after World War II in honor of the Chinese national hero Zheng Chenggong (鄭成功, Koxinga). During the Japanese rule period, this settlement was known as Shinko (新港). Today, Chenggong preserves the atmosphere of a traditional fishing harbor, where the rhythm of life is governed by the tides, and local residents still set out to sea at dawn.

The location on the east coast of Taiwan has shaped the character of this place — there is no hustle and bustle of megacities, but there is space, fresh ocean air, and the opportunity to observe the life of a fishing community in its pristine form. Chenggong webcams allow you to see this measured life from anywhere in the world.

Fishing Port — The Heart of the City

Chenggong Fish Harbor is the largest fishing port on the east coast of Taiwan. A variety of fish is unloaded here, including tuna and mackerel, but the port's most famous product is billfish. The town is decorated with billfish-shaped sculptures, and local restaurants are renowned for dishes made from freshly caught seafood. The fishing port in Chenggong is also known as Xingang Fishing Port.

The port operates around the clock — fishermen return with their catch, the piers are bustling with activity, and a spontaneous market unfolds on the waterfront where you can buy seafood straight from the boat. Watching this life through a Chenggong webcam is like being on the waterfront, listening to the cries of seagulls and the sound of waves.

Sanxiantai Bridge — The Calling Card of the Coast

The Sanxiantai Bridge is an eight-arch arched bridge, the construction of which the government completed in 1987. The bridge's structure resembles winding waves, coiling like a sea dragon. The Sanxiantai Bridge connects mainland Taiwan with a small island located on the coast 4 km northeast of Chenggong town and has a length of 400 meters.

The name Sanxiantai (三仙台) means "Terrace of the Three Immortals". According to local legend, three of the Eight Immortals from the Taoist pantheon once rested on this cape. Sanxiantai is considered one of the most iconic natural and cultural landmarks of Taiwan's east coast, and entry to the bridge is free. The bridge offers a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and the rocky coastline, and on clear days, green islands are visible on the horizon.

Whale and Dolphin Watching

The east coast of Taiwan is one of the best places in Asia to observe marine mammals. Numerous species of whales and dolphins swim and feed near the shore, and many travelers come to the coast of Hualien and Taitung hoping to see a whale. Special excursion boats are organized from Chenggong, heading out to ocean to search for these majestic animals.

The chances of seeing an orca, dolphin, or minke whale here are extremely high — the warm currents off the east coast create ideal conditions for marine mammals to feed. Chenggong webcams sometimes capture water spouts released by whales in close proximity to the shore.

Culture of the Indigenous Amis People

The Amis are one of the most numerous indigenous peoples of Taiwan, who have inhabited the island since medieval times. In language and cultural customs, they are related to Filipinos (Tagalog), and they speak a unique Amis language. In Chenggong and its surroundings, Amis communities maintain a traditional way of life, passing down skills in fishing, weaving, and agriculture from generation to generation.

Chenggong is home to the Amis Folk Center, which is a popular tourist attraction on the east coast. Here you can explore traditional architecture, taste local cuisine, watch ceremonial dances, and learn about the maritime traditions of this people. Amis fishermen still use boats whose design has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

Natural Landscapes and Coastline

Chenggong is surrounded by dramatic natural landscapes — rocky cliffs alternate with sandy beaches, and the green mountains of the Central Mountain Range approach the very edge of the ocean. The coastline is indented with bays and capes, each with its own name and history. The east coast of Taiwan is one of the few places on the island where nature has preserved its pristine appearance.

Hot springs, tropical forests, and rice terraces are located in the vicinity of Chenggong. Local residents are engaged not only in fishing but also in agriculture — rice, sugarcane, and tropical fruits are grown on the fertile plains. Chenggong webcams show not only the town but also the surrounding landscapes — the boundless ocean, rocky shores, and green mountain slopes.

Climate and Natural Features

Chenggong's climate is tropical maritime, with high humidity and abundant rainfall. Warm currents ensure comfortable water temperatures year-round, attracting not only tourists but also marine life. Typhoons, which periodically strike the east coast, shape the unique relief of the coastline — waves carve grottoes and arches in the rocks, creating fantastical landscapes.

The sunrises in Chenggong deserve special mention — the sun rises from the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. This spectacle attracts photographers and artists from all over Taiwan. The Chenggong live stream allows those in other time zones to witness these sunrises.
