Ancient city at the foot of the Pamir-Alay

Osh is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, with a history spanning more than 3,000 years. Archaeological excavations on the southern slope of Sulayman-Too mountain have uncovered remains of a settlement of ancient farmers from the Bronze Age, confirming the deep antiquity of these places. The city of Osh is often called "the same age as Rome" — both cities emerged around the same historical period, when the first trade routes were just beginning to connect East and West.

Today, Osh is the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan with a population of 473,500 people and the official status of the "southern capital" of the republic. This city is the administrative center of Osh Region and plays a key role in the economic and cultural life of the country's southern region. Located in the Fergana Valley at an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, Osh is surrounded by mountain ranges that protect it from cold northern winds and create a unique microclimate.

The geographical location of Osh at the crossroads of trade routes determined its fate as the region's largest trading center. In ancient times, caravans traveling along the Great Silk Road from China to Europe converged here. Claudius Ptolemy mentioned the "Stone Tower" located in the Osh area as the midpoint of the Silk Road — a place where traders stopped to rest and exchange goods.

Sulayman-Too — sacred mountain and UNESCO site

Sulayman-Too mountain is the calling card of Osh and its main attraction. This sacred mountain for Muslims of Central Asia rises above the city, creating a unique silhouette visible from almost every point. According to local legend, the prophet Suleiman, known in biblical tradition as King Solomon, prayed here. In the contours of the peaks, some see the word "Allah," while others see a person lying on their side, giving the mountain a special mystical appeal.

In 2009, Sulayman-Too became the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyrgyzstan. On the slopes of the mountain, over 400 petroglyphs dating back to the 12th century BC have been discovered. These rock paintings depict animals, hunting scenes, and ritual ceremonies, telling about the life of ancient inhabitants of the Fergana Valley. Sulayman-Too acquired cult significance 3,000 years ago, during the era of totemism, making it "a mountain older than the Quran."

At the top of the mountain is a small mosque built at the end of the 20th century, and at its foot is a Historical Museum carved directly into the rock. Climbing Sulayman-Too is a must for any traveler, as the summit offers a panoramic view of all of Osh and the surrounding mountain ranges. Local residents come here for prayers and meditation, and pilgrims from all over Central Asia visit the mountain as a sacred place.

Osh Bazaar: a two-thousand-year crossroads of trade routes

Osh Bazaar, known as Zhayma, is one of the oldest markets in Central Asia with a two-thousand-year history. More than 2,000 years ago, a bazaar already existed at this location, where silk, spices, ceramics, and jewelry were traded. Today, Osh Bazaar is not just a trading area but a city within a city, where you can find everything: from fresh fruits and famous Osh-style manto dumplings to traditional fabrics and handicrafts.

In the 2000s, one of the alleys of Osh Bazaar became especially popular thanks to manto dumplings — family cafes operated in cozy courtyards to the singing of partridges, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The bazaar stretches along the river of the same name and occupies a vast territory where it's easy to get lost among the rows of goods. Here you can still see craftsmen hand-forging metal products, weaving carpets, and making traditional Kyrgyz hats.

In 2025, the authorities of Osh decided to relocate the old bazaar after the devastating mudslides of July 2024, which caused serious damage to the infrastructure. This decision caused mixed reactions among residents and traders, for whom the bazaar is not just a workplace but part of their family history and cultural heritage.

Architectural heritage and religious shrines

The architectural appearance of Osh is a unique combination of traditions from different eras and cultures. In the old part of the city, Soviet-era buildings with characteristic monumental architecture have been preserved, neighboring modern shopping centers and residential quarters. Mosques and madrasas built in the traditions of Central Asian architecture give the city a special flavor.

The Sulayman-Too Mosque, located at the foot of the sacred mountain, is one of the city's most important religious structures. Nearby is the Astana-baba mausoleum, dating from the 15th–16th centuries, which is revered as the burial place of one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad. These monuments attract not only believing pilgrims but also researchers of Islamic architecture in Central Asia.

In the central part of Osh is Kurmanjan Datka Square — a monument to the legendary ruler of southern Kyrgyzstan, known as the "Alai Queen." In the late 19th century, Kurmanjan Datka united disparate clans and managed to maintain peace in the region during the difficult period of Alai's incorporation into the Russian Empire. Her name became a symbol of wisdom and strength of spirit for the residents of Osh.

Climate and nature of the Fergana Valley

Osh is located in the fertile Fergana Valley, which is famous for its mild climate and abundant harvests. The continental climate with hot summers and moderately cold winters creates ideal conditions for growing cotton, tobacco, fruits, and vegetables. In spring, the city is immersed in the greenery of blooming gardens, and in autumn, famous Osh apricots and grapes appear on the bazaars.

The mountain ranges surrounding Osh protect the city from the penetration of cold air masses from the north. The Ak-Buura River, flowing through the city, is fed by glacial meltwater and provides water for numerous canals and aryks that irrigate fields and gardens. In the vicinity of Osh, you can encounter unique natural landscapes: from alpine meadows to mountain gorges with crystal-clear rivers.

The biodiversity of the region is striking: snow leopards, mountain goats, and many bird species inhabit the mountains. Ala-Archa National Park, located a few hours' drive from Osh, is a favorite place for hiking and mountaineering. The nature of the Fergana Valley creates a unique backdrop for the urban landscape of Osh, making it one of the most picturesque cities in Central Asia.

Districts and modern life of the southern capital

Modern Osh is a dynamically developing metropolis with a population of almost half a million people. The city is divided into several districts, each with its own character and atmosphere. The central part concentrates the main administrative buildings, shopping centers, and cultural institutions. Business life is bustling here, with banks, restaurants, and hotels operating.

The area around Sulayman-Too preserves a traditional way of life: here you can see ancient adobe houses, narrow streets, and working craftsmen's workshops. New residential areas on the outskirts of the city are built with modern residential complexes with developed infrastructure. Osh's transport system includes buses, minibuses, and recently introduced electric buses connecting all parts of the city.

The educational sphere of Osh is represented by several universities, among which Osh State University is the largest scientific center in southern Kyrgyzstan. The city has theaters, museums, and libraries that preserve the cultural heritage of the region. Osh is also an important transport hub: Osh Airport connects the southern capital with Bishkek, Moscow, and other cities, and the railway station provides communication with neighboring countries.

The multicultural character of Osh is its distinctive feature. Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tajiks, and representatives of other peoples live here, creating a unique ethnic mosaic. This diversity is reflected in the cuisine, holidays, and daily life of the city. Osh is famous for its tolerance and hospitality, making it attractive to tourists from all over the world.
