History of Depok: from a Dutch plantation to a modern metropolis

The history of this city began in the late 17th century when on May 18, 1696, Dutch plantation owner Cornelis Chastelein purchased a vast tract of land of about 12.44 km² south of Batavia. Chastelein, a former high-ranking official of the Dutch East India Company, didn't just create a plantation — he founded a unique settlement where he freed slaves and gave them land. Today, watching the city through Depok webcams, you can see how much this area has changed over three centuries.

For a long time, Depok remained a small settlement, but in the 20th century it began to develop rapidly. In 1982, the city received administrative city status, and on April 20, 1999, it became a full-fledged municipality, separating from Bogor Regency. This date is now celebrated as the founding day of modern Depok.

Origin of the name: Sundanese roots and Dutch legends

The etymology of the city's name still causes debate among historians. According to the most reliable version, 'Depok' comes from a Sundanese word meaning 'abode' or 'place of rest'. This name existed before the arrival of the Dutch and reflected the character of the settlement as a place where former slaves found freedom and peace.

There is also an alternative version linking the name to the Dutch abbreviation of the Protestant Christian organization 'De Eerste Protestante Organisatie van Christenen'. However, linguists and historians lean toward the Sundanese etymology, which has deeper historical roots.

University of Indonesia: the academic heart of the city

The relocation of the main campus of the University of Indonesia played a huge role in transforming Depok into a modern metropolis. In 1987, the university moved from Central Jakarta to Depok, where a campus of 320 hectares was built for it — the largest in Southeast Asia.

Today, the university campus is not just an educational institution, but a city within a city with its own parks, lakes, sports facilities, and research centers. Students from all over Indonesia come here for knowledge, and Depok webcams allow you to see this bustling student life in real time.

Geographical location and scale of the city

Depok is located directly south of Jakarta and is part of the Greater Jakarta agglomeration (Jabodetabek). The city's area is about 199.91 km², making it the third largest city in this metropolis after Jakarta itself and Bekasi.

The city borders Jakarta to the north, Bogor to the south, Bekasi to the east, and Tangerang to the west. This strategic location has made Depok a crucial transport hub connecting the capital with other cities in West Java.

Modern Depok: a satellite city with its own character

Although Depok is often called a 'bedroom community' of Jakarta, this definition doesn't reflect the full complexity of the city. More than a million people live here, and this number continues to grow. Many residents do work in the capital, but Depok is actively developing its own economy, especially in education, trade, and services.

The city's infrastructure includes the Trans Depok city bus system, a network of express toll roads, and a rapidly developing interchange for light rail transit (LRT) connecting Depok to the capital. Through Depok webcams, you can watch traffic on the main highways and assess the scale of transport flows.

Cultural heritage and local cuisine

Depok preserves a unique cultural heritage rooted in Sundanese traditions. The local cuisine is a true gastronomic guide to West Java. Be sure to try Nasi Timbel — rice compressed and wrapped in banana leaves, Karedok — raw vegetable salad with peanut sauce, and Kolenak — fried tapioca with coconut sauce.

In the city, you can also find traces of the Dutch colonial past — old buildings, monuments, and memorials reminding of Cornelis Chastelein and the origins of the settlement. These historical places often fall into the lens of Depok webcams, allowing you to examine architectural features in detail.

Shopping malls and public spaces

Modern Depok is famous for its shopping malls that attract shoppers from across the agglomeration. Margo City, Depok Town Square (Detos), Cinere Mall, and other shopping complexes offer a wide selection of goods and entertainment. Depok webcams installed near these facilities show busy parking lots and pedestrian zones.

The city also takes care of green zones — parks and squares where residents relax after work. The university campus with its vast territory also serves as a public space for walks and sports.
