Gudauta — a resort on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia

Gudauta is a city in Abkhazia, the administrative center of the Gudauta District, located on the coast of the Black Sea, 37 km northwest of Sukhumi. This is a place where mountains meet the sea, and subtropical vegetation frames a wide bay. Gudauta received its resort status in 1926, and since then has been attracting travelers with its mild climate and picturesque landscapes.

Archaeological excavations indicate that the first settlers appeared in the area of the modern city approximately 7 thousand years ago, in the Neolithic era. Over these millennia, Gudauta has evolved from an ancient settlement to a modern resort city, while preserving its authenticity and connection to Abkhaz traditions.

Historical Heritage of Gudauta

The Gudauta District holds a special place in the history of Abkhazia. It is the only one of the seven districts of the republic where the majority of the population were Abkhaz — 53.1% according to the 1989 census. According to the same census, the city's population reached about 14.9 thousand people, of which Abkhaz made up 48%, Russians — 21.2%, Georgians — 13.1%. By 2003, the population had decreased to 7,738 people, which was due to the consequences of the Patriotic War of Abkhazia.

In Soviet times, Gudauta was a closed military town due to the Bambora airbase located here. For thirteen months of the Patriotic War of Abkhazia, the city essentially bore the full brunt of the conflict. Today, Gudauta is a peaceful place where the memory of the past coexists with resort life.

Lykny — the Former Capital of the Abkhazian Principality

In the Gudauta District lies the village of Lykny — the former capital of the Abkhazian Principality, where until its abolition in 1864 the residence of the princes Chachba-Shervashidze was located. The palace of this ruling dynasty served as a residence from approximately the 12th century until the beginning of the last century; today only ruins remain, but they are impressive in their scale.

The main attraction of Lykny is the active cross-domed Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos from the 10th–11th centuries with rich fresco paintings from the 14th century. This is one of the oldest Christian churches in Abkhazia, preserving the prayerful atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Near the church lies the famous Lykny Meadow — a venue for traditional Abkhaz holidays and gatherings.

Natural Attractions of the Gudauta District

The Gudauta District is famous not only for its historical monuments but also for its natural beauty. The beaches of Gudauta Bay are considered the best in Abkhazia: on the western coast — small pebbles, on the eastern shore — soft sand. The bay is protected from winds by mountain ranges, creating comfortable conditions for swimming throughout the season.

The area contains the ruins of medieval Christian churches — Aylyga-Abyku in the village of Khypsta and the Bambora Church, known as the "Gray Lady." These monuments attract history enthusiasts and pilgrims. The Bambora airbase, once a closed military facility, is today of interest as a monument of the Soviet era.

City Life and the Gudauta Market

The center of trade in the city is the city market at 88 Adyghe Street. Here you can buy traditional Abkhaz souvenirs: copper cezve coffee pots, local honey, wines of popular brands — "Psou," "New Athos," "Chegem," "Bouquet of Abkhazia," "Apsny," as well as chacha, adjika, sulguni cheese, spices, and ceramics. Buying traditional souvenirs in Abkhazia is most profitable at the markets — here there is a large selection of fresh products and the opportunity to haggle.

The Gudauta promenade is a place for evening walks for both locals and tourists. From here, there is a view of the bay and mountain ranges framing the coast. In season, there are cafes and restaurants serving Abkhaz cuisine, offering the freshest seafood and local dishes.

Climate and Weather in Gudauta

Gudauta is located in a humid subtropical zone. Summers here are hot and sunny, with an average July temperature of about +25°C, and the sea water warms up to +24–26°C. Winters are mild, with rare frosts. Thanks to the protection of mountain ranges, the city is shielded from cold northern winds, making the climate especially comfortable for year-round stays.

Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, with a slight increase in winter months. Air humidity is comfortable, and the mountain and sea air create a unique microclimate beneficial for the respiratory system.
