Zakliczyn Market Square: era with 500 Years of History
Zakliczyn: A Town with a Centuries-Old Market Square
In southern Poland, in the picturesque Dunajec Foothills, lies the small town of Zakliczyn — a place where time seems to have slowed down. The town's main artery is its market square, one of the largest in the Lesser Poland province. This is where the online camera is pointed, allowing you to see this space in real time. The Zakliczyn web camera offers a view of the square stretching 170 meters long and 100 meters wide, making it truly massive for a settlement of this size.
The town is situated on the right bank of the Dunajec River, approximately 25 kilometers west of Tarnów. It is a quiet place, unspoiled by crowds of tourists, yet possessing its own quiet charm. Zakliczyn's market square is not just an open space — it is a living organism that has served as the center of urban life for nearly five centuries.
Five Centuries of Fairs and Trade
Trading traditions at this site date back to the 16th century. According to historical records, weekly fairs on the square have been held for almost 500 years. Merchants from all around once gathered here to sell grain, livestock, textiles, and handicrafts. Today, fairs are still held, albeit on a more modest scale.
The square was designed on a grand scale — its dimensions of 100 by 170 meters allowed it to accommodate dozens of market stalls, wagons, and crowds of visitors. It was the heart of Zakliczyn's economic life, a place where fates were decided and deals were made. Even now, when the town's economy has changed, the square remains its main public space.
The Town Hall: Lesser Poland's Miniature Sukiennice
In the center of the square stands the town hall — a building constructed in the early 19th century. Locals call it the "Little Sukiennice" — a reference to the famous Cloth Hall in Kraków, albeit on a miniature scale. It is a two-story building with characteristic architecture that served as the seat of municipal authorities until 1934.
During World War II, the town hall endured a dark period — it was used as an arms warehouse. After the war, the building was restored and today is one of Zakliczyn's landmarks. The online camera on the square allows you to examine its facade in detail: symmetrical windows, the central entrance, and the characteristic austerity of lines from that era.
Zabytkowe Houses and Timber Architecture
Along the perimeter of the square stand the so-called zabytkowe houses — residential buildings with columns supporting a porch or gallery. This architectural tradition is characteristic of Lesser Poland and gives Zakliczyn its distinctive character. Some of these houses have preserved elements of timber framing, which is rare in an urban environment.
Of particular interest is one of the houses on the square, known as the "House under..." — its full name and history still spark debate among local historians. These buildings are not museum exhibits but residential homes where everyday life unfolds. The real-time camera shows locals going about their business and tourists strolling leisurely along the facades.
Legends of Zakliczyn: Śwityczek and the Devils
Like any ancient town, Zakliczyn is shrouded in legends. The most famous of these is connected to the origin of its name. According to legend, the village was named after Śwityczmel of Melsztyn — a knight who owned these lands. Another legend tells of the "Devils of Melsztyn" — mystical creatures that supposedly appeared in the surrounding area during the times when the threat of building a castle loomed over neighboring Melsztyn.
These stories are passed down from generation to generation and give the town a special air of mystery. You only need to see the square at sunset once — and you begin to understand where these legends came from.
Surroundings: What to See Nearby
Zakliczyn is an excellent base for exploring the Dunajec Foothills. Just 3.1 kilometers from the town are the ruins of Melsztyn Castle — once a powerful fortress, of which only fragments of walls and a tower remain. A bit further away is a Franciscan monastery, and the popular Velo Dunajec cycling route runs throughout the area.
For lovers of panoramic views, it is recommended to climb the observation tower in Dąbrówka Szczepanowska — from there, a breathtaking view of the Dunajec Valley and surrounding hills opens up. But the best way to start exploring the region is with Zakliczyn itself — its market square sets the tone for the entire journey.
2022 Reconstruction: A New Breath for the Square
On May 21, 2022, the square was ceremoniously reopened after a major reconstruction. The project included paving with cobblestones, installation of new street furniture, landscaping, and modernization of lighting. It was a landmark event for the town — the square gained a modern appearance while preserving its historical character.
The reconstruction was made possible through funding from the Lesser Poland Voivodeship budget and European Union funds. Now the square has become an even more attractive place for residents and visitors — concerts, fairs, and festive events are held here.
Live View from the Camera
The online web camera broadcasts a live panoramic view of Zakliczyn's market square. In the field of view is the central part of the square with the town hall, surrounded by zabytkowe houses with characteristic columns. The camera operates in real time, so on screen you can see both the everyday life of the town — pedestrians, cars, local residents — and preparations for fairs or festive events.
Depending on the time of day and season, the square looks different: in the morning it is filled with people rushing to work, during the day — with tourists and shoppers, in the evening — with leisurely strolls. In winter, the square is covered in snow, acquiring a fairy-tale appearance; in summer, it is lush with greenery and flowers. The online camera allows you to observe these changes at any time, without leaving home.
