Panoramic View of Szczawno-Zdrój from Mount Chełmiec — Online Webcam
Mount Chełmiec — Observation Point Over Lower Silesia
Mount Chełmiec rises to 850 meters above sea level according to the latest measurements conducted by AGH specialists from Kraków. It is the second highest peak of the Wałbrzych Mountains — surpassed only by neighboring Borowa, which is 3 meters higher (854 m a.s.l.). Both summits are part of the prestigious "Crown of Polish Mountains" list — an association of the highest points of every mountain range in the country.
The online webcam is installed right here, at this dominant vantage point overlooking the area. The broadcast originates from a height that provides a line of sight spanning dozens of kilometers in good visibility. Szczawno-Zdrój — the resort town at the foot of the mountain — is clearly visible below, and on clear days the horizon extends to the distant Sudetes massifs.
The Resort of Szczawno-Zdrój at the Foot of Chełmiec
Szczawno-Zdrój is one of the oldest spa resorts in Lower Silesia, located within the city limits of Wałbrzych. The name roughly translates from Polish as "Sorrel Spa" — a reference to the mineral springs that have been used here for therapeutic purposes since the 19th century. The town is renowned for its park area, historic villas, and tranquil atmosphere, which stands in sharp contrast to Wałbrzych's industrial past.
From Mount Chełmiec, Szczawno-Zdrój appears as a compact cluster of red tile roofs interspersed with green parkland. The online camera allows you to examine the resort's layout: the central avenue, the spa district, and individual buildings of the wellness complexes. In winter, the town is blanketed in snow, while in summer it is lush with greenery — the contrast between seasons is striking.
Infrastructure at the Summit: TV Tower and Weather Station
The summit of Chełmiec is not just a natural observation point. Significant infrastructure is concentrated here. At the summit you will find: a stone observation tower, a 69-meter mast of the Radio and Television Broadcasting Center, and a tourist shelter with a fire pit. It is the lattice metal tower that frequently appears in the frame — it serves as a support for antennas and simultaneously acts as a landmark for hikers.
Next to the tower stands a building with a red tile roof and a small turret — this is the Chełmiec weather station, continuously transmitting data on wind speed, dew point, visibility, and atmospheric pressure. Information from this station is used when compiling weather forecasts for the entire Wałbrzych region. The Szczawno-Zdrój webcam effectively broadcasts from the territory of an active meteorological post.
Panoramic View: What Is Visible on the Horizon
The camera faces northeast, toward Wałbrzych and the Millennium Cross. In clear weather, objects more than 30 kilometers away can be seen from Chełmiec. From the summit, there is a view of the city of Wałbrzych, the resort of Szczawno-Zdrój, neighboring peaks of the Wałbrzych Mountains, and the Świdnica–Wałbrzych railway line.
Landmarks of the region are also visible on the horizon: the ruins of Książ Castle, Książ Castle, and the Millennium Cross — one of the largest in Europe. The cross stands on a neighboring elevation and in clear weather can be made out by its distinctive silhouette. Książ Castle — the third largest in Poland — is located in the valley and from the height of Chełmiec appears almost toy-like.
Wałbrzych — the largest city in the area — occupies an extensive stretch of land between the mountains. From the height of 851 meters, its industrial zone, historic town hall, and residential neighborhoods on the slopes are all visible. The railway line connecting Świdnica and Wałbrzych stretches as a gray ribbon through the valley — trains can be seen as moving dots.
Seasonal Transformations of the Landscape
The landscape from Mount Chełmiec changes dramatically depending on the season. In winter, the coniferous forest covering the slopes becomes a dark green backdrop for the snowy blanket. Szczawno-Zdrój under snow looks particularly picturesque — the red roofs contrast with the whiteness, and the park alleys turn into geometric patterns. On freezing days, visibility is at its maximum: the horizon extends to the Sudetes ranges on the border with the Czech Republic.
In spring, the forest sprouts fresh greenery, and the valley fills with fog — it drifts above the Pełczna River and envelops the lower part of Szczawno-Zdrój. In summer, dense foliage partially obstructs the view, but the town drowns in the greenery of its parks, creating a colorful carpet between the sanatorium buildings. In autumn, the coniferous forest is punctuated by crimson patches of deciduous species — maples, birches, and beeches.
Night View from 851 Meters
When the sun sets behind the ridges visible from Chełmiec, the landscape transforms. Szczawno-Zdrój lights up with a grid of street lighting — the central avenue and spa district form a glowing rectangle in the darkening valley. Wałbrzych glows more broadly: industrial lights, highways, and residential neighborhoods merge into a continuous patch of light.
On moonless nights, stars are visible above the valley — light pollution from the cities here is moderate, and the Milky Way can be seen quite distinctly. The TV tower at the summit blinks with red warning lights, alerting aircraft. The weather station continues to operate around the clock — data on temperature, humidity, and wind is updated continuously.
How to Get to Chełmiec
Mount Chełmiec is a popular hiking destination in Lower Silesia. The ascent from Szczawno-Zdrój takes about 1.5–2 hours along marked tourist trails. You can start from the resort's park area and hike through the coniferous forest on the red or blue trail. The elevation gain is about 400 meters — the climb is moderately challenging and accessible to prepared tourists without special equipment.
An alternative option is to drive to a parking lot at the base and continue on foot. At the summit, hikers are greeted by a shelter with a canopy and a fire pit — you can take a break, wait out bad weather, or simply enjoy the panorama. The stone observation tower allows you to survey the surroundings with binoculars or simply from a height above ground level.
