Zillertal Valley in Mayrhofen — online webcam
Geographical location and scale of the valley
Located in the heart of Tyrol, this area is impressive in its size. The Zillertal Valley is the largest valley in Tyrol, with 25 villages and 4 main ski areas: Mayrhofen-Hippach, Fügen-Kaltenbach, Zell-Gerlos (Zillertal Arena), and Tux-Finkenberg. It is located just 50 km southeast of Innsbruck, making it easily accessible for transfers. This is the widest valley south of the Inn Valley, which gave its name to the Zillertal Alps — a heavily glaciated section of the mountain range.
Ski paradise: slopes and lifts
For active recreation enthusiasts, this region offers unique opportunities. Every year, the Mayrhofen area attracts up to 35% of all tourists in Tyrol. Here you'll find the longest suspension cable car in Austria and the steepest descent in the country. The total length of slopes reaches 159 km, and the three main ski areas — Ahorn, Penken, and Gerlos — cater to both beginners and professionals. In 2009, the German magazine SkiMagazin recognized the Zillertal as the best ski resort in Tyrol.
From farm to tourist mecca: the history of Mayrhofen
The history of these places goes back centuries. Mayrhofen was first mentioned around 1200 as a farming settlement of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Traditional agriculture in the valley includes cattle breeding, dairy farming, and sheep farming on alpine pastures (Alm). Forestry plays a significant role, including a large sawmill in Fügen. Today, Mayrhofen is known as an Après ski center with a tradition of lively table dancing and night parties.
Natural diversity of the Zillertal
In addition to ski slopes, the region is rich in natural beauty. The Zillertal Alps Nature Park covers 422 sq. km (almost 40% of the valley). Over 9,000 animal species live here, including about 500 butterfly species, and more than 1,300 plant species grow here. The narrow-gauge railway Zillertalbahn runs through the valley from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, and the 50-minute journey leaves unforgettable impressions.
Unique attractions of the region
In Mayrhofen, there are places worth visiting regardless of the season. On Mount Steinplatte, there is Triassic Park — a dinosaur theme park with the opportunity to participate in fossil archaeological excavations and an observation deck. And high in the mountains hides Nature's Ice Palace — an ice cave with a constant temperature of 0°C year-round.
What you can see on the camera
This webcam broadcasts a real-time panorama of the ski area in the Alps. In the foreground, there is a snowy slope with people moving on it and ski equipment near the slope fence. A cable car with chairs stretches across the frame, going up the slope, with lift supports and cables visible. In the background, a majestic panorama of snowy mountain peaks with forested slopes and the valley unfolds. Safety markers and orange cones are placed on the slope, marking the boundaries of the slope, and snow cover covers the entire visible area.
