History of Mira Street in Volzhsky

Mira Street is one of the main thoroughfares of Volzhsky, whose name carries echoes of the Soviet era. The decision to name it was made in 1970, when the new part of the city was actively developing. The name was given in honor of the Volzhsky City Committee for the Protection of Peace, established in October 1969. The street had no previous names — it was named during the design of the new residential area, making its history relatively young compared to other districts of the city.

Volzhsky itself is a young city. Its founding is linked to the construction of the Stalingrad Hydroelectric Power Plant, and January 9, 1951 is considered the official birth date of the hydrobuilders' settlement. Mira Street appeared during the period of active city growth, when not only the industrial core but also full-fledged residential quarters with developed infrastructure were being formed.

One of the distinctive features of Mira Street is its well-developed sports infrastructure right in the courtyards of residential buildings. For decades, there existed a sports playground between houses No. 13 and 15, which was a center of attraction for local residents. The modern stage of sports infrastructure development on Mira Street is characterized by the emergence of multi-functional facilities. In the courtyard of house No. 75, a large-scale sports ground with two sectors totaling 800 square meters has been completed. Mira Street runs through several microdistricts, among which Krasnooctyabrsky stands out. This area has a special status: on March 29, 2012, the former urban-type settlement of Krasnooctyabrsky was incorporated into the Volzhsky urban district. Before that, it existed as an independent settlement with its own history.

Interestingly, people lived in the Krasnooctyabrsky area even before Volzhsky itself appeared. It is one of the earliest settled parts of the modern city limits. Today, Mira Street connects old quarters with new developments, creating a continuous urban landscape. The initial section of the street (microdistricts 10–16) was formed in the late 1960s–1970s, where five-story panel buildings predominate.

The initial sections are built up with typical five-story Khrushchyovka buildings erected during the mass construction period. However, in recent years, modern residential complexes have also appeared.

Among the new developments, the "Dynasty na Mira" residential complex stands out — a comfort-class brick apartment building with 80 units. Another new building is house No. 112, a brick-and-monolithic structure up to 14 stories high, completed in 2023 and designed for 120 apartments. Thus, Mira Street represents a spectrum of residential development from the Soviet period to the present day.

Mira Street stretches through several microdistricts of Volzhsky, so you can reach it by various routes. The main landmarks are microdistricts 10, 16, 21, 30, and 37, through which the street passes. For those driving, it is most convenient to travel along Lenin Prospekt or Karbysheva Street, from which there are exits to the desired neighborhoods.

Public transport also covers this area — minibuses and buses run along adjacent thoroughfares, from which you can walk to the desired house. For orientation, it is recommended to use house numbers: the sports grounds are mainly located in the area of houses No. 13–15 and No. 75, while modern residential complexes are closer to the beginning of the street.
