Wolong Panda Center in Gengda — Online Webcam
Where the Panda Center in Gengda Is Located
The Wolong Panda Center (Shenshuping Panda Base) is located in Gengda Town, Wenchuan County, approximately 120–130 km northwest of Chengdu, at an altitude of about 1,700 meters above sea level. This is a mountainous area in Sichuan Province, covered with dense bamboo forests — the natural habitat of the giant panda. The uniqueness of this place is that the Wolong Panda Center is the only panda breeding center in China located within an active national nature reserve.
History of the Wolong Panda Center
The modern Shenshuping base emerged after tragic events. On May 12, 2008, a devastating magnitude 8.0 earthquake damaged the old Wolong base and destroyed about 23% of the panda habitat. This threatened the entire species conservation program. Construction of the new Shenshuping base began in 2011 with financial support from the Hong Kong government, and the relocation of pandas started in 2012. Today, it is a modern scientific and tourist complex where conditions are created that are as close to the wild as possible.
Pandas in Gengda: Behavior and Lifestyle
The Wolong Panda Center is home to more than 30% of all wild giant pandas in the world — about 30 individuals can be observed here. These animals have a distinctive feature: pandas in Wolong are more active and energetic in cold weather. When the temperature drops, they become more mobile, play more, and explore their enclosure. In warm months, on the contrary, they prefer to rest in the shade and conserve energy. The center is open to visitors from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM daily, with morning hours being the best time when pandas are most active.
How to Get to the Panda Center in Gengda
The journey from Chengdu to Gengda takes about 2–3 hours by car. You can get there by bus from the Xinnanmen Shuttle bus center in Chengdu or via Dujiangyan. The route passes through scenic mountain passes in Sichuan Province, so the trip itself is impressive. For those who are not ready for a trip to the mountains of Sichuan, an online camera is a great alternative — you can watch pandas from anywhere in the world.
Volunteer Programs at the Panda Center
The Panda Center in Gengda offers unique volunteer programs for tourists. Participants can feed pandas, prepare bamboo, make special cakes for the animals, and receive an official certificate. This is not just entertainment — it is a real contribution to species conservation. The program allows you to see the center's work from the inside and understand how much effort is required to maintain the giant panda population.
Gengda Webcam at Different Times of the Year
The camera in Gengda operates in real time and shows the life of pandas without embellishment. In cold months, viewers more often see active animals — pandas run, roll on the ground, and climb the wooden structures of the enclosure. When it's warm, they spend most of their time sleeping or leisurely chewing bamboo. Nighttime is also interesting: pandas are crepuscular creatures, and in the evening hours they often show activity that cannot be seen during the day.
Why You Should Watch the Stream from Gengda
Gengda is not just a zoo. It is a place where serious scientific work is being done to save the species from extinction. The giant panda is a symbol of the worldwide conservation movement, and the Wolong Center plays a key role in breeding and reintroduction programs. Observing these animals in an environment close to their natural habitat is a completely different experience than watching pandas in a city zoo. The mountains of Sichuan, fresh mountain air, and bamboo thickets in the background create a sense of being in the wild.
What You Can See on the Camera
The stream shows a giant panda up close in the enclosure of the Wolong Panda Center in Gengda. The animal may be eating bamboo, resting on a wooden platform, playing with structures, or simply sitting in its characteristic pose. In the background, you can see the wooden structures of the enclosure: ladders, platforms, a fence made of logs and branches. In the distance — mountains and hills with green vegetation of Sichuan Province. This is a typical exhibit for center visitors, where pandas can be observed in conditions as close to their natural habitat as possible. The online camera allows you to see all this in real time, without the need to travel to the mountains of China.
