Deep Creek Lake in McHenry — Online Webcam
Deep Creek Lake — Maryland's Man-Made Gem
In the Allegheny Mountains of western Maryland lies the region's largest inland body of water — Deep Creek Lake. This reservoir owes its existence not to natural forces but to human engineering genius: in 1925, the Pennsylvania Electric Company dammed the Deep Creek river to meet hydroelectric power needs. Thus was born a reservoir that over time became the state's premier tourist attraction.
The lake's surface area covers approximately 3,900 acres — roughly 16 square kilometers, with an impressive 69 miles of shoreline. Despite its name (Deep Creek translates to "Deep Stream"), the average depth is modest — about 20 feet, though in some places the bottom drops to 75 feet. This is more than sufficient for boating, fishing, and water recreation that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Wisp Resort — Maryland's Only Ski Destination
On the shores of Deep Creek sits Wisp Resort — the only ski resort in the entire state of Maryland. This destination transforms McHenry into the region's winter capital: when cold weather arrives, skiers and snowboarders flock here from across the East Coast. Chairlifts carry tourists up slopes offering panoramic views of snow-covered forests and the lake itself.
But Wisp isn't just a winter destination. In summer, the resort switches to adventure park mode: zip lines, mountain bike trails, Segway tours, and rope courses are all in operation. The chairlift continues to run, offering scenic rides with observation platforms.
Wildlife of the Allegheny Mountains
The Deep Creek area is a true wildlife sanctuary amid civilization. The dense forests surrounding the lake are home to white-tailed deer that consider themselves the absolute masters here. On the lawns in front of condominiums, they graze with an air that suggests humans are the guests in their home.
In recent years, the black bear population has been growing — these cautious animals are more often seen at dusk, but can sometimes be spotted during the day. Bald eagles soar above the water, scanning for fish from above. Beavers and river otters inhabit the waters themselves, while turtles bask on rocks near the shore.
Year-Round Recreation at the Lake
Deep Creek is a resort without seasonal breaks. In summer, the lake transforms into a water sports hub for water skiing, boating, and kayaking. Anglers compete for catches of walleye, trout, and largemouth bass. The state park beach welcomes swimmers, while SUP boarders glide across the smooth water surface.
In autumn, the region turns crimson — trails around the lake fill with visitors coming to photograph the fall foliage. In spring, wildlife awakens and trails reopen for hiking after the winter quiet.
McHenry — The Unofficial Capital of Deep Creek
The town of McHenry grew around the lake and depends entirely on tourist traffic. It's the largest settlement in Garrett County, home to shops, restaurants, rental outlets, and hotels. The town's life follows the rhythm of the resort season: winter brings a ski boom, summer brings beach bustle.
In 2018, the region received additional status and protection: Deep Creek Lake State Park was officially established as a state park, guaranteeing ecosystem preservation and providing tourist infrastructure — campgrounds, educational centers, and eco-trails.
What You Can See on the Camera
The online camera is positioned on an elevated point with a view of Deep Creek Lake and the adjacent ski resort area. In the foreground are multi-story condominiums with balconies and pitched roofs, surrounded by green lawns and trees. Behind them, rolling terrain gives way to dense forest, and to the right a chairlift ascends the slope. The live webcam shows both the development itself and the open spaces of ski runs rising up forested slopes. In clear weather, the lake's waters and the opposite shore covered in forest are visible from this vantage point.
