The Town of Mission: History and Location
Mission is a town in southwestern British Columbia, officially established in 1892 as a municipal district. Before the arrival of Europeans, these lands were inhabited by the Stó:lō people. The townsite was planned in 1891 by developer James Welton Horn, after whom three central streets of Mission are named.
The town's name comes from St. Mary's Mission, a Catholic mission founded in 1861 to convert the local population and control miners on their way to the goldfields. According to the 2021 census, Mission's population was 41,519.
Clarke Theatre: The Cultural Heart of Mission
Clarke Foundation Theatre is a multi-purpose venue at 33700 Prentis Avenue, owned and operated by the town of Mission. The theatre was established with significant financial support from the Clark family through the Clark Foundation, highlighting the role of private support in creating the town's cultural institutions.
The auditorium seats 702: 496 on the main floor and 206 in the balcony. The theatre is equipped with a sprung dance floor, an orchestra pit, 20 stage traps, and 4 dressing rooms, making it one of the most technically equipped venues in the Fraser Valley region.
Fraser Valley: Nature and Agricultural Region
The Fraser Valley stretches from the town of Hope to the Pacific Ocean and is the most important agricultural region of British Columbia. Thanks to fertile soils and a temperate climate, the area is home to dairy farms, berry fields, wineries, and microbreweries. The region features diverse landscapes: from fertile plains to mountain slopes covered with coniferous forests.
Heritage and Symbols of Mission
On October 18, 1999, the Mission Weavers and Spinners Guild presented the town with an official tartan reflecting the region's natural and industrial heritage. This symbol highlights the town's connection to the lumber and textile industries, which historically played an important role in Mission's economy.
