History of Elks Lodge 616 on Waikiki

The Waikiki Elks Lodge 616 building was constructed in 1959 and underwent a full renovation led by the architectural firm hi.arch.y llp. It is one of the two oldest beach clubs in Waikiki, serving the local community for over 119 years. The club is owned by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, officially established on February 16, 1668 as a charitable organization to support families in need.

The lodge is located in the heart of Waikiki, at the foot of the famous Diamond Head. This place has long become not only a center of social life but also an observation point for the ocean — it is here that the camera is installed, broadcasting surfing in real time.

Surf Spots Near Elks Lodge

The camera is aimed at a stretch of coastline near Diamond Head, which offers diverse surf spots — from gentle waves for beginners to serious surfing along the South Shore. Wave height here varies from thigh to head high and depends on the overlay of SSW swells and coastal winds.

Near the lodge are surf spots known among local surfers: Shaka and Tonggs, as well as the Waikiki Walls area. The camera's name — Shaka Cam — is a reference to the surf spot of the same name, popular among longboarders. The westward orientation of the lens allows observing not only surfing but also sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

Weather Conditions and Climate

Honolulu is in a tropical climate zone with characteristic trade winds. Air temperatures year-round stay in the range of 24–30°C, and the ocean water warms up to 25–27°C. Trade winds blow predominantly from the northeast, creating comfortable surfing conditions on the south shore.

The best swell for surfing in this area comes from the south and southwest during the summer months (May–September), and in winter (November–March) northern swells are possible. You can get here by bus routes 14, 200, E, W1, W2. For tourists staying in central Waikiki, a walk along the shore will take about 20–30 minutes. Nearby are park areas, restaurants, and beach clubs.
