Cieszyn Market Square — watch the webcam in real time
Cieszyn Market Square — the heart of the old town
Cieszyn is a small Polish town in Silesia, located on the border with the Czech Republic, that attracts tourists with its authentic atmosphere and well-preserved historic center. The main attraction is the Market Square (Rynek), where life buzzes from early morning until late evening. Most sightseeing routes start from here, and this is where the webcam is installed, allowing you to see this place in real time from anywhere in the world.
The square was founded in the 13th century under King Wenceslaus II and has remained the center of urban life ever since. Its irregular trapezoidal shape, tapering to the south, reflects medieval urban planning traditions — such outlines are typical of towns that grew up around trade routes. Today it is a fully pedestrian zone, paved with cobblestones, where it is pleasant to walk while admiring the architecture.
Cieszyn Town Hall: from Gothic to Classicism
The dominant feature of the square is the town hall with its distinctive stepped gable, clock, and red tiled roof. The ochre-yellow walls with rows of windows create a solemn yet cozy appearance. However, the current building is not the first on this site. As a result of the Great Fire of Cieszyn, the medieval Gothic town hall was destroyed, and in 1789–1796 a new building in the Classicist style was erected in its place, designed by architect Ignacy Chambrez.
The town hall facade deserves special attention. Its gable is decorated with a bas-relief featuring the city coat of arms — a crowned black eagle — as well as allegorical female figures of Justice and Wisdom (Prudence). Above them is carved the Latin inscription "Aedes haec iuris et aequitatis domus" — "This is the house of law and justice." These symbols serve as a reminder that for centuries justice was administered here and the most important decisions for the city were made.
Town Hall Tower: a viewing platform with views of Silesia
Unlike the building itself, the town hall tower has a more ancient history. It has survived since the 17th century — built in the 1670s and standing approximately 30 meters tall. Today the tower is open to tourists and serves as an excellent viewing platform. Climbing to the top, you can see a panorama of the entire Cieszyn, the hilly landscape of Silesia, and even neighboring Czech Republic — after all, the town sits on the border, divided by the Olza River into Polish and Czech parts.
Architectural heritage of the square
The Market Square is surrounded by historic kamienice — traditional Polish tenement houses. Their facades are designed in the Baroque and Classicist styles, and many buildings have preserved medieval cellars and arcades with characteristic vaulted ceilings. These arcades once served as trading places, and today they house cozy cafés and shops.
In the center of the square, next to the town hall, there is a historic well with a sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk — a Czech martyr and patron saint against floods. According to local legend, if you rub his figure, your wish will surely come true. Tourists actively take advantage of this belief, so the bronze sculpture is polished to a shine.
Legends and mysteries of the town hall
Cieszyn is rich in legends, and one of the most famous is connected specifically to the town hall. According to tradition, the heart of the last Duke of Cieszyn from the Piast dynasty, Frederick William, was embalmed and walled up in the town hall wall after his death, where it supposedly rests to this day. This story gives the building a special mystical atmosphere — imagine that behind these walls a piece of medieval history may be hidden.
Another legend is connected to underground passages. They say that from the town hall to the Church of the Holy Cross and other buildings on the square there are underground tunnels that were used for secret meetings and as shelters during wars. Some of these passages were discovered during restoration work, but most of underground Cieszyn remains unexplored.
How to get to the Market Square
The Market Square is located in the very center of Cieszyn, so it is not hard to find. If you arrive by train, you can walk from the railway station to the square in 10–15 minutes via Targowa Street. Direct buses run from Prague or Katowice — the stop is within walking distance of the historic center.
For those traveling by car, there are parking lots around the square and on adjacent streets. However, please note that the square itself is a pedestrian zone, and vehicle entry is prohibited. It is better to leave your car on one of the neighboring streets and stroll on foot, enjoying the atmosphere of the old town.
Weather and best time for observation
Cieszyn is located in a temperate climate zone with distinct seasons. In summer, the square is bathed in sunshine, street cafés are open, and the facades of the tenement houses are reflected in the cobblestones. In winter, especially during the Christmas season, a Christmas tree is set up here and markets are held — at this time, the webcam shows festive lights and people in warm jackets.
In autumn, the square is especially picturesque — the trees around the town hall turn yellow and red, creating a contrast with the red tiled roof. In spring, flower beds bloom and the fountain in the foreground operates at full capacity. At any time of year, the webcam shows a lively picture — people strolling across the square, tourists with cameras, and locals going about their business.
What the camera shows
The online camera is positioned to capture the maximum space of the Market Square. In the center of the frame is the historic town hall with its stepped gable, clock, and red tiled roof. The ochre-yellow walls of the building are clearly visible, as are the rows of windows reflecting the sky.
In the foreground is a round fountain and the paved pedestrian square, across which people are constantly moving. Around the town hall, trees and greenery are visible, changing color with each season. Along the perimeter of the square and on adjacent streets, there are parked cars and moving traffic.
In the background, a view of the urban development opens up — multi-story residential and commercial buildings, a hilly landscape with trees. In the distance, the domes and spire of a church can be made out — these are the dominant features of the cityscape visible from the square. The panorama of Cieszyn's historic center allows you to feel the scale of this ancient Silesian town and its architectural diversity.
The live broadcast operates around the clock, so you can watch the square both day and night. After dark, the town hall illumination is turned on, highlighting its architectural details — the gable, clock, and tower. This spectacle is no less attractive than the daytime view, especially on holidays when the square is decorated with garlands.
