Lake Conroe Reservoir: An Artificial Sea in Texas
Lake Conroe is not just a body of water, but a large-scale hydraulic engineering project that transformed the landscape of southeastern Texas. Located in Montgomery County, the reservoir stretches for dozens of kilometers, offering panoramas that are hard to find in other parts of the state. Created in 1973 as a backup source of drinking water for Houston, Lake Conroe today is a multi-purpose recreational area. Construction began in 1969 and took four years. The San Jacinto River Authority implemented the project as a joint venture with the City of Houston, which owns the rights to two-thirds of the reservoir's water resources. The dam, 2.2 miles long and 82 feet high with five radial gates, holds 21,000 acres of water — approximately 8,500 hectares of reservoir surface area.
Geography and Location
Despite its name, only the southern third of the lake lies within the city limits of Conroe. The main part of the water area is located in the unincorporated territory of Montgomery County, while a small northern section extends into Waller County. This geography makes Lake Conroe accessible from different points, but it is the southern part that remains the most developed for recreation.
From downtown Houston to the lake is approximately a 60-minute drive along IH-45. This proximity to the metropolis has turned the reservoir into a popular weekend destination. The Sam Houston National Forest, located nearby, adds to the region's appeal for hiking and camping enthusiasts.
Coastal Infrastructure: Pavilions and Marinas

Several marinas operate on the lake, the largest being The Palms Marina in the city of Willis. It is a family marina in a protected cove with a depth of 15-20 feet, surrounded by an earthen dam. Covered boat slips up to 18′×60′, dry boat storage, valet launch, fuel station, ship's store, pavilion, showers, and laundry facilities are available here. The infrastructure caters to day-trippers and boat owners who leave their vessels for long-term storage.
Fishing: Record Catfish and Bass
Lake Conroe is a true paradise for anglers. Its waters are home to largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, crappie, and three species of catfish: blue, channel, and flathead. Silver carp, introduced to control aquatic vegetation, has also become part of the fish population.
The lake record for flathead catfish is impressive: 86 pounds at 55 inches in length. This is one of the largest catfish caught in Texas waters. Fishing here is popular year-round, but it is during the winter months, when the water is cool, that catfish become especially active in the deep channels.
Fauna: Bald Eagles and Forest Dwellers
During the winter months, Lake Conroe hosts bald eagles — majestic birds that have chosen the reservoir as their wintering ground. They can be seen soaring over the water, perched on flooded trees, or in tall pines along the shoreline. For ornithologists and wildlife photographers, this is a unique opportunity to observe these predators in their natural habitat.
The lake's aquatic vegetation includes emergent and submerged species, flooded forests, and hydrilla. These thickets create ideal habitat for fish and attract waterfowl. The Big Thicket National Preserve, located to the southeast, adds to the region's biodiversity — it is part of the "Piney Woods" of the southeastern United States, known for its ecosystem.
Water Recreation Activities
Lake Conroe offers water activities for every taste: sailing, motorboating, water skiing, jet skiing, and swimming. Several marinas with boat rentals make the water area accessible even to those who don't own a vessel. FM 830 highway leads to The Palms Marina, from where it's easy to get out onto open water.

In winter, the thermometer rarely drops below 10°C, making recreation by the water pleasant even in January and February.
Spring and fall are peak seasons for fishing and water sports. In summer, the lake attracts swimming and boating enthusiasts. In fall, the landscapes around the reservoir take on golden hues, and bald eagles begin to arrive for wintering.
