Livigno is a unique ski resort in northern Italy, located in the Lombardy region, province of Sondrio. It sits at an altitude of 1816 meters above sea level, practically on the border with Switzerland. Geographical Location and Altitude Range

Livigno is located in the Alta Valtellina valley, just south of the Swiss border. The ski area elevations range from 1816 to 2798 meters above sea level. The highest peaks of the ski zone are Carosello (2797 m), Della Neve (2785 m), and Mottolino (2402 m).

Thanks to this elevation difference, Livigno's slopes receive more sunlight and are less exposed to winds than many other alpine resorts. This makes skiing here comfortable even on frosty days.

Ski Infrastructure

Livigno offers skiers and snowboarders 115 kilometers of slopes of varying difficulty. Among them are 12 black, 37 red, and 29 blue runs — there is a route here for both beginners and experienced freeriders.

The resort operates 31 lifts: 6 cable cars, 13 chairlifts, and 11 surface lifts. This is enough to avoid long queues even during peak season. The ski season in Livigno runs from late November to early May — one of the longest in Italy.

Ski Zones: Carosello, Costaccia, and Mottolino

The resort is divided into three main ski zones. The eastern part includes Carosello and Costaccia — these are wider and more relaxed slopes, suitable for intermediate skiers. The western zone — Mottolino — is considered more challenging and is popular among freeride and carving enthusiasts.

Mottolino is also known for its developed cycling infrastructure in summer — the resort is among the popular mountain biking destinations in the Alps. In winter, a snowpark and cross-country ski trails operate here.

Climate and Seasonality

Livigno has a distinctive microclimate. Thanks to the enclosed valley and high elevation, it is often clear here when neighboring regions are cloudy. The average temperature in winter months ranges from -5 to -10°C, but the sunny weather makes skiing comfortable.

Snow in Livigno falls early and lasts long — usually from November to May. Many slopes are equipped with snowmaking systems, ensuring good coverage even during low-snow periods.

Resort Features

Livigno is also unique in that it is a duty-free zone. This means that prices for goods here are significantly lower than in the rest of Italy. Many tourists come here not only for skiing but also for shopping.

The resort is also popular among snowmobile enthusiasts. Special snowmobile routes have been laid in the surroundings of Livigno, as well as cross-country ski trails totaling over 100 km.
