History of Discovery and Naming
The glacier's name is associated with Anatoly Bogdanovich — an outstanding geographer who dedicated his life to studying the mountain regions of Central Asia, who was the first to explore this area in the mid-20th century. However, the name itself was established even earlier — in 1911 on the initiative of glaciologist Sergei Dmitriev. Since then, the glacier has become an important site for scientific observation and mountain tourism. Numerous climbing routes to peaks over 4000 meters begin here, including ascents of Chkalov, Komsomol, and Fizkulturnik.
Geographical Location and Characteristics
Bogdanovich Glacier is located in the Maloalmatinsky spur of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, southeast of the Talgar Pass, at the junction of the Maloalmatinsky and Komsomol spurs. It is a valley glacier approximately 7–7.5 km long, with an area of about 2.5–3 km², and a width in the lower part of up to 800–1000 meters, with well-developed lateral and terminal moraines. It lies at an altitude of 3370–3800 meters above sea level, and the tongue ends at approximately 3374–3400 meters. The coordinates of the glacier's center are approximately 43.086° N, 77.109° E.
The October Ice Cave
Inside Bogdanovich Glacier hides a unique natural formation — the October Cave — the largest ice cave in Kazakhstan, about 1390 meters long. It was discovered in October 1963 by members of the Kazakh Republican Speleotourism Section, which gave it its name. The cave is an ice grotto 1 to 3 meters wide and up to 8–10 meters high. At the time of discovery, it had 5 entrances, but until recently all of them were buried, and only in 2019 were some entrances cleared. For tourists, the October Cave is the main attraction of the route, but descending into it requires caution and appropriate equipment.
How to Reach the Glacier from Shymbulak
The most popular route to Bogdanovich Glacier starts from the Shymbulak ski resort. The classic day hike: Medeu → Shymbulak cable car (2260 m), then transfer to the second lift to the Talgar Pass. From there — an uphill hike along the trail leading to the glacier. The trail from Shymbulak-2 to the glacier and back is about 3 km each way and is accessible for hiking without special mountaineering training. The best time for the hike is from May to October, when the routes are open for tourists and the mountain temperatures are more comfortable. It is important to remember that the area above the Talgar Pass is not serviced by rescuers, so you must carry warm clothing, food, and communication devices.
Seasonal Features: Winter and Summer
Bogdanovich Glacier looks completely different in different seasons. In winter and early spring, the slopes are covered with deep snow, and the glacier merges with the surrounding landscape into a single white expanse. This time is suitable for experienced skiers and freeriders who descend the untouched slopes. In summer, from June to August, snow clears from the lower parts of the slopes, exposing gray-brown rocky outcrops, and the glacier takes on a bluish tint due to the melted surface layer. In autumn, September through October, the weather in the mountains is most stable and visibility is maximum — this period is considered the best for hiking and observation. Shymbulak Ski Resort

The Medeu — Shymbulak cable car with eight-person cabins transports tourists from Medeu Gorge to the main resort station in 15–20 minutes. From there, the second section of lifts leads to the Talgar Pass, where the hiking route to the glacier begins. Shymbulak is not only a ski resort but also a base for summer hikes, cycling, and paragliding.
