Geography of Hualien County
Hualien is a city and the capital of the eponymous county on the eastern coast of Taiwan (Republic of China), on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. Hualien is the largest county in Taiwan by area, covering approximately 4,628 km². The region lies at the junction of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, making it seismically active and shaping its unique terrain. The city of Hualien serves as a gateway to one of the island's most scenic natural attractions.
Huadong Valley
Huadong Valley (Huadong Valley / East Rift Valley) is a tectonic rift valley stretching between Taiwan's Central Mountain Range (Zhōngyāng Shānmài) and Coastal Mountain Range (Hǎi'ān Shānmài). The valley's length is approximately 150 km. It is a fertile lowland known for its hot springs, rice terraces, and rice and tea production. The valley takes its name from the combination of the first characters of the cities of Hualien (Hua) and Taitung (Dung), between which it is located.
Flower Fields and Seasonality
The flower fields in Huadong Valley are one of the region's main tourist attractions. Chihou is a former dairy farm in Huadong Valley, known for its cosmos and sunflower fields that bloom in the winter months (December–January). The yellow-orange daylilies visible on the broadcast create a vivid contrast with the green forest backdrop, attracting photographers and tourists from across Taiwan.
Tectonic Activity of the Region
Hualien is located at the junction of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, making the region seismically active. It is here that the subduction of the Philippine Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate occurs, forming the unique mountain terrain of eastern Taiwan. This geological activity also accounts for the numerous hot springs in Huadong Valley.
Attractions of Hualien County
Hualien County is renowned for its natural attractions. Taroko National Park is known for its marble gorge (Taroko Gorge), formed by the Liwu River, reaching depths of up to 1,100 m in places. Qingshui Cliff is a limestone cliff on the Pacific coast, rising approximately 800 m above sea level, located in the southern part of Hualien County and forming part of Taroko National Park.
