Chusovoy — a city with a four-century history
Chusovoy is one of those Ural cities that grew from industrial settlements and preserved their industrial identity. The history of these places began long before the appearance of the metallurgical plant: in 1568, the Chusovoy town — a wooden fortress from which Yermak's historic campaign to Siberia began — was founded on the banks of the Chusovaya River. The lands on both sides of the Kama up to the Chusovaya River were granted by Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1558 to Grigory Anikeevich Stroganov, and later these territories passed to the Golitsyn princes, who developed iron production here.
The official founding date of the city is considered to be 1878, when the construction of the Gornozavodskaya railway was completed and the Chusovskaya station was established. A year later, French entrepreneurs founded a metallurgical plant, which gave rise to the modern city. Today, Chusovoy is a city in Perm Krai with a population of about 45,000 people, preserving the spirit of Ural industrial architecture.
The Chusovaya River — the main artery and landmark
The Chusovaya River is not just a geographical feature but a true calling card of the city. According to a legend recorded by a Yekaterinburg local historian, the river got its name from two beautiful sisters — Chuosi and Iset — whom the Underground Serpent tried to abduct at night, but the girls managed to escape. Hundreds of attractions are located on the river, and its beauty is known far beyond Perm Krai.
One of the main natural attractions is the Grebenyok rock formation — a stone rapid rising above the water. Such rocks along the Chusovaya are called "boitsy" (fighters), and they attract tourists and rafters from all over the country. The depth of the river in some places reaches 25 meters, making it not only beautiful but also technically challenging for building bridges and crossings.
The cable-stayed bridge — an engineering symbol of the city
The pedestrian suspension bridge across the Chusovaya River is popularly called the "cable-stayed bridge". It connects Zakurye Island with the "mainland" and has become one of the symbols of Chusovoy. Construction of the bridge began in 1988 at the site of an existing ferry crossing, and the opening took place on November 29, 1996.
The total length of the Chusovoy bridge is 1,598 meters. The second part of the bridge was put into operation in 2022, which significantly improved transport connectivity between parts of the city. The project was technically challenging precisely because of the depth of the river and the rocky soil at the site of the supports.
Architecture of old Chusovoy
Old Chusovoy is an open-air museum. The main thoroughfare of the historical part of the city — Lenin Street — began to transform into a unified art space in 2019. The reconstruction turned it into a pedestrian zone with art objects and historical markers.
One of the architectural landmarks is the Palace of Culture of Metallurgists, built in 1964 according to the design of architect N. A. Semtsov. The building is often compared to an ancient temple due to its portico and monumental columns. And the "Luch" (Ray) cinema is a historical building that is an architectural landmark of the city and recalls the Soviet era of urban planning.
Chusovoy Atlases — the pride of the city
The "Chusovoy Atlases" project is dedicated to outstanding natives of the city who "carry on their shoulders" the industrial, sporting, and cultural glory of Chusovoy. Among them are writer Viktor Astafyev, scientist Leonard Postnikov, athlete Irek Gubaidullin, and many others. These people have made significant contributions to the development of not only the city but the country as a whole.
How to get to Chusovoy
Chusovoy is located in Perm Krai, approximately 190 kilometers from Perm. You can reach the city by rail — Chusovskaya station is on the Moscow — Yekaterinburg line. There is also a bus station connecting Chusovoy with Perm, Kungur, and other cities in the region. For motorists, the R242 highway leading to the city is available.
What to see in Chusovoy
In addition to the cable-stayed bridge and the Chusovaya embankment, it is worth visiting Lenin Street with its art objects, the Palace of Culture of Metallurgists, and the "Luch" cinema. What the camera shows
The online camera streaming from a location in Chusovoy shows a household waste collection area enclosed by a green metal chain-link fence. Inside the fenced area are large green metal waste bins, as well as a wire mesh cage with garbage bags. Behind the area, an asphalt road stretches into the distance. In the background, residential buildings, trees, and dense vegetation are visible — a typical residential neighborhood of Chusovoy. Tall grass and wild plants grow around the area. The camera operates in real time and allows you to monitor the situation in this part of the city around the clock.
