Goodyear: From Cotton Fields to a Fast-Growing Phoenix Suburb
Goodyear is a city in Maricopa County, located in the western part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Founded in 1917 as a cotton production company for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, it remained a small agricultural settlement for a long time. Most of the construction and population growth occurred after 1990, and today Goodyear is among the fastest-growing cities in Arizona. According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates as of July 1, 2024, the population reached 118,186 people, which is 469.3% more than in 2000.

Bullard Wash Trail: A Linear Park Through the Entire City
Bullard Wash is a linear park (linear wash) that runs through the city of Goodyear and serves important recreational and drainage functions. The trail connects the future Estrella Falls regional shopping center site with Goodyear Ballpark, ending at its confluence with the Gila River. The total length of the Bullard Wash Park & Roosevelt Canal route is 7.8 miles (about 12.5 km).
The route passes through park areas and along the Roosevelt Canal, offering an easy walk or bike ride. The trail is suitable for running, walking, and family recreation. One of the park entrances is located at 152nd Drive (W. Virginia Entrance), and another at W McDowell Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395.
Goodyear Ballpark: MLB Spring Training Home
Near the trail is Goodyear Ballpark — the city's most important sports facility. It serves as the spring training base for two Major League Baseball teams: Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds. The stadium opened in 2009 for the Guardians and in 2010 for the Reds, becoming the most expensive municipally-built spring training facility at a cost of $108 million.
In February and March, spring training takes place here, and the stadium is open to fans. This makes the area around Bullard Wash Trail particularly lively during the baseball season.
Estrella Mountains and Regional Park

How to Get to Bullard Wash Trail
Access to the trail is available through several entrances. One is located at 152nd Drive (W. Virginia Entrance) in Goodyear. Another entrance is at W McDowell Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395. Parking is available at trailhead lots, as well as at regional parks such as Estrella Mountain Regional Park and White Tank Mountain Regional Park (a fee may be required for some sections).
The trail is located north of Interstate 10 and west of Goodyear City Hall, making it easily accessible for residents and visitors to the city.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Goodyear has a desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. The best time for walks along the Bullard Wash Trail is from October to April, when temperatures are comfortable for outdoor activities. In summer, temperatures can exceed 40°C, so during hot months it is recommended to visit the trail early in the morning or in the evening.
