The park, known as Stadsparken i Trelleborg, is located in the very heart of the city and offers viewers a peaceful stroll among century-old trees, bronze sculptures, and exotic palms. This is not just a green zone — it is a cultural landscape where history meets modernity, and nature showcases its diversity through rare plant species and rich birdlife.
Trelleborg City Park — the Green Heart of Sweden's Southernmost City
Trelleborg occupies a unique geographical position: it is Sweden's southernmost city, located in Skåne County just 10–15 kilometers west of the southernmost point of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The city park has become a place for locals and visitors to take a break from the urban hustle, enjoying manicured lawns, shaded alleys, and picturesque ponds. Walking through the park, you will feel the atmosphere of southern Sweden — the mild climate of Skåne allows plants to grow here that you would rarely find in other parts of the country.
History of the Park: From Industrial Boom to Green Oasis
The park traces its history back to 1896, when Trelleborg was experiencing rapid industrial growth. The late 19th century became a turning point for the city: large enterprises appeared here, including Trelleborg Industries and a ferry company, which laid the foundation for the modern economy. It was during this period that the decision was made to create a city park — a green space for workers and their families to rest. Since then, the park has been renovated multiple times but has retained its original function as a place for meetings, walks, and cultural leisure.
Bronze Sculptures and Street Art
One of the most notable features of the city park is the collection of bronze sculptures installed in 2009. These works have become a real magnet for visitors of all ages. Among them is Fred Aberg's sculpture depicting two boys walking arm in arm, conveying themes of friendship, solidarity, and childhood companionship. Nearby stands a bronze sculpture called Lion of Trelleborg on a pole, and a composition with an umbrella — several human figures gathered together under a creatively designed umbrella with a segmented structure and a greenish-blue tint. These works have turned the park into an authentic open-air art gallery.
Trelleborg's Palms — the City's Signature
Trelleborg is often called the "City of Palms," and this nickname is well deserved. The city is home to "Trelleborg's Palm" (Trelleborgspalmen) — a relatively fast-growing fan palm known as Washingtonia Filifera, including the Chusan palm. These exotic trees have become the city's calling card and the park's hallmark, creating a Mediterranean resort atmosphere at the southern tip of Scandinavia. The mild climate of Skåne allows the palms to feel quite comfortable, making Trelleborg a unique location in Sweden.
Birdlife in the Park: From Peacocks to Black Swans
The city park is renowned for its diverse birdlife. In addition to countless songbirds, peacocks, snow geese, ducks, and black swans inhabit the ponds and meadows. This rich ecosystem indicates a healthy natural environment in the park, where waterfowl and land birds find shelter. Visitors often come here specifically to feed the ducks and admire the graceful swans gliding across the park ponds. The park also features a statue of Isaac the seal (Isaac the seal) — a tribute to the marine fauna of the region.
Water Tower and Historic Pavilion
Between the square and the park rises the historic water tower (Trelleborgs gamla vattentorn), which is currently undergoing restoration. This tower is an important architectural monument, reminiscent of the city's past. Next to it is a pavilion with a café where you can enjoy a coffee while watching the life of the park unfold. This is a popular meeting spot for locals, especially in the warm months when the café terrace fills with people enjoying the sun and views of the green lawns.
Festivals and Events in the Park
The city park is not only a place for quiet walks but also a venue for vibrant events. Palmfestivalen takes place here — a festival with entertainment, parties, food, music, palm trees, amusement rides, and market stalls. The outdoor stage regularly hosts concerts and live events. The Trelleborg municipality calendar includes exhibitions, tours, performances, and much more, making the park a cultural center of the city throughout the year.
