Historical Heritage of Vila Vella — A Medieval Town at the Edge of the Sea
Tossa de Mar is a place where history literally rises from the rocks. The only fully preserved medieval fortified town-fortress on the entire Costa Brava coast, Vila Vella, has stood on a rocky headland for more than eight centuries. Construction of the defensive walls began around 1187 and continued throughout the 13th century. Four powerful towers — Torre de Jonquera, Torre es Codolares, Torre del Castillo, and Torre d'en Joanas — together with the crenellated walls created an impregnable front from the sea side. In 1931, the complex was granted the status of a Spanish National Historic Monument, cementing its significance for the country's cultural heritage.
Inside the fortress walls, life once thrived: there stood residential houses, a medieval hospital for the poor, the governor's mansion, and the remains of the Romanesque Church of Saint Vicent, built in the 12th century. Today, tourists stroll along the narrow stone streets of Vila Vella, and beyond the drawbridge — the only surviving entrance — opens a breathtaking view of the bay.
Blue Paradise — A Poetic Name Coined by an Argentine Artist
Many call Tossa de Mar the "Blue Paradise," but few know that a real person stands behind this poetic nickname. Argentine artist and writer Alfredo Llopis lived and worked in the town in the 1930s. He was so struck by the unique light, the azure color of the water, and the dramatic rocky landscapes that he wrote a book of poetry and prose titled "Paradís Blau" (Blue Paradise). It was this work, along with Llopis's paintings depicting the Bay of Tossa, that established the romantic brand for the city, which is still used in travel guides around the world.
Geology of the Bay and the Uniqueness of Platja Gran Beach
The Bay of Tossa de Mar is the result of millennia of work by water and wind. River streams from the Gavarres massif eroded soft limestone and granite rocks, forming river valleys. When sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age, these valleys were flooded, creating a perfect crescent-shaped bay. This origin explains its closed shape and the remarkable clarity of the water.
The town's central beach — Platja Gran — resembles a natural amphitheater. On three sides it is surrounded by cliffs and the medieval walls of Vila Vella, creating the feeling of a sheltered open-air theater. The beach is approximately 380 meters long and about 60 meters wide, with fine golden sand that is pleasant to walk on barefoot. Thanks to the closed shape of the bay, strong waves hardly penetrate here — the water remains calm and warms up faster than on open stretches of the coast.
Defense Against Pirates — Towers, Bonfires, and Secret Passages
The massive walls of Vila Vella did not appear by chance. The main threat to medieval Tossa de Mar was constant raids by Berber and Ottoman pirates. It was the fear of them that forced the inhabitants to move from their huts outside the walls to the protection of the stone fortifications in the 12th–13th centuries. Sentries kept watch around the clock on the towers, especially on Torre de Jonquera. When pirate ships appeared on the horizon, they lit signal fires, warning the population and giving them time to take shelter behind the walls.
There are historical accounts of underground passages that led from the fortress to the sea. They were used for secret evacuation and water supply during long sieges. And the famous today walking trail Camí de Ronda, along which tourists now stroll, originally served as a patrol path for guards watching for pirate galleys along the shore. The towers of Vila Vella served a double function: in addition to observation, they acted as shelters for storing grain and valuables during raids.
Best Viewpoints and Panoramic Views
Tossa de Mar generously rewards travelers with breathtaking viewpoints. Mirador de la Vila is located right inside the fortress walls — from here opens the classic view of the bay, Platja Gran beach, and the endless sea. This is the very angle captured on postcards and in guidebooks.
At the top of the rocky peninsula is Cap de Tossa with its active lighthouse. The viewpoint here offers a 360-degree panoramic view: on one side — the cozy bay with the town, on the other — the wild Platja del Codolar beach and the rocky coastline stretching into the distance. The Camí de Ronda trail, laid along the cliffs from Platja Gran to La Mar Menuda beach, offers a chance to see the Vila Vella fortress from the sea side — exactly as medieval seafarers saw it. And if you seek solitude, it's worth climbing to the Sant Jordi hermitage on the hill behind the town — there are fewer tourists here, and the panorama is no less impressive.
