Monument to M.I. Kalinin — Cultural Heritage Site
In the center of the square stands a monumental statue of Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin — a Soviet state and party figure, Chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. The monument is a cultural heritage site of regional significance (registration number 741711243070005, registered on September 20, 1977). The sculpture was installed in 1964 and is made of cement with marble chips. Kalinin is depicted full-length — wearing a coat and cap, with his hands clasped together.
The total height of the monument is about 6 meters. The pedestal is brick, plastered and painted with oil paint. A cast-iron fence 45 cm high is installed around the monument, and the monument itself is bordered by a flower bed. The occupied area is 10×8 meters.
History of the Place: From "Red Graves" to the Garden Square
The place where the square now stands has a deep history. After the 1917 Revolution, there was "Red Graves" Square — this is where participants of the Revolution and Civil War — residents of Kopeysk — were buried. The garden square behind the Stalin monument, adjacent to Kalinin Square, became a place to honor the memory of "Chelybkopey" miners who fell during the Civil War years. The square was named in honor of Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, who played a significant role in Soviet history.
Monument to the Victims of Political Repression
In the square and in close proximity to it is the Monument to the Victims of Political Repression, unveiled in 2018. It is a granite stele with lines from Anna Akhmatova's poem "Requiem." This monument serves as a reminder of the tragic pages in the country's history and is an important element of Kopeysk's memorial space.
What to See Near the Square
Three blocks from Kalinin Square is Labor Glory Square with a fountain and the "I Love Kopeysk" art installation. It is a popular spot for photos and walks. Kalinin Square itself is surrounded by multi-story residential buildings, creating the typical atmosphere of a residential neighborhood in an industrial city of Chelyabinsk Oblast.
