From Molotov to Severodvinsk: How the City Got Its Name

Severodvinsk is a city with a complex history that bore the name Molotov until 1957, named after a Soviet political figure. Today it is one of the largest centers of Russian shipbuilding, located on the coast of the White Sea in Arkhangelsk Oblast. The name "Severodvinsk" reflects its geographical position — the city stands on the Northern Dvina River, not far from where it flows into the sea.

Interestingly, Yagry Island, part of the city limits, earned the nickname "Pink" as far back as 1553 from members of Richard Chancellor's English expedition. The sailors were struck by the unusual hue of the shore upon landing. Today, abandoned houses and entire settlements on the island create a particularly dramatic backdrop for northern lights hunters.

The City That Was Closed to the World for 30 Years

Until 1992, Severodvinsk remained a completely closed city. On February 21, 1991, it was opened to citizens of the USSR, but to this day it retains its closed status for foreigners — entry is coordinated with the relevant authorities on a case-by-case basis. In effect, it is a monotown where about 60% of the population are families of plant workers.

In 1991, a strong "DemRussia" movement operated here, which was the first to nominate Yeltsin as a candidate for President of Russia. The city has always been not only an industrial center but also a place of active civic engagement.

Sevmash: The Forge of the Nuclear Fleet

The city's main enterprise — Severnoye Mashinostroitelnoye Predpriyatie (Sevmash) — is Russia's largest center for building nuclear-powered submarines. Over its history, 142 nuclear and 40 diesel submarines have been built here, as well as 45 surface ships.

Today, Sevmash is implementing Projects 955A and 885M — modern nuclear submarines of new generations. It was planned to build 10 such submarines by 2024. The unique nuclear submarine "Severodvinsk" was also built here — a double-hull, single-shaft vessel with reduced noise levels. The enterprise is also developing civil shipbuilding and creating equipment for the oil and gas industry.

Attractions: From Ancient Temples to Modern Memorials

Severodvinsk is rich in historical and cultural sites. The village of Nyonoksa is home to a famous temple ensemble, and the Nikolo-Korelsky Monastery attracts pilgrims and tourists. Yagry Island features the Yagry Pine Forest and a beach with a 4.82 rating — one of the best places for relaxation.

Among the monuments, the "Milepost" art object stands out, along with the "Memory" memorial with its Eternal Flame, the monument to the city's first builders, and the monument to Mikhail Lomonosov. The memorial sign to Richard Chancellor (rating 4.3) recalls the first contacts with the English. The military memorial complex "Grieving Motherland" (rating 4.5) is a tribute to the fallen.

Museum lovers should visit the Severodvinsk City Museum of Local History with a rating of 4.89 — one of the best in the region. The Park of Culture and Recreation (rating 4.31) is suitable for family outings.

Hunting for the Northern Lights: When and Where to Watch

Severodvinsk is located at a latitude where the aurora borealis occurs at geomagnetic activity of KP 2-3. The spectacle here is more colorful than in the vicinity of Arkhangelsk. The official season runs from August to April, but the best time is from late October to late February.

For observation, you need to drive at least 10-20 km from the city to avoid light pollution. In autumn, Yagry Island is entirely at the disposal of northern lights hunters — the abandoned houses create a particularly dramatic and somewhat eerie backdrop for the natural phenomenon. The main condition is clear, frosty weather.
