Sejny Town Square — Online Webcam
The online webcam transports the viewer to a quiet and authentic town in the very northeast of Poland. Sejny is a place where Polish, Lithuanian, and Belarusian cultures intertwine, and every street breathes history. The live camera broadcasts the central square, where the rhythm of provincial life is combined with the monumentality of bygone eras.
Sejny — a Border Town with a Rich History
Located in the eastern part of the Suwałki Lake District (Pojezierze Suwalskie), close to the borders with Lithuania and Belarus, this town preserves the atmosphere of old Europe. Sejny is the capital of Sejny County in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Despite its modest size — the town's area is only 4.49 km², — it plays an important role in the region. The population here slightly exceeds 5,472 people, making it a true center of provincial life.
From Dominicans to a County Center
The growth and development of Sejny was largely facilitated by the activities of the Dominicans. Dominican monks settled in these lands in the 17th century, receiving them under the will of the influential magnate Jerzy Grodziński. Their legacy still defines the architectural appearance of the town. The main landmark is the Dominican monastery building with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The town status was granted to these lands much earlier: town rights were granted to Sejny in 1563.
Territorial Disputes and Military Upheavals
The history of Sejny is full of dramatic events. During the interwar period, Lithuania put forward territorial claims to Poland regarding Sejny and its surroundings. In 1915, the town was captured by the German army and incorporated into the Ober Ost territory. In July 1919, the Germans handed Sejny over to the Lithuanian authorities, but already in August of the same year, the Polish Military Organization staged a successful uprising in the town. During World War II, from 1939, the town was under German army occupation and was liberated by the Red Army only on August 31, 1944.
Architectural Heritage of the Suwałki Lake District
Sejny is a true open-air museum. The main attractions of the Suwałki Lake District include the Jewish community building complex and the Dominican monastery complex. The unique atmosphere of the town is created by the fact that historic stone houses with arched windows have been preserved here, which can also be seen in the broadcast from the central square.
What You Can See on the Camera
The live webcam is positioned to capture the very heart of the town — the central square with a roundabout. In the center of the frame is a memorial monument with a sculptural figure on a stone pedestal, surrounded by flower beds and green shrubs. Nearby, the Polish flag flies on a flagpole. Behind the monument is a historic stone house with arched windows, and in the background on the left, a church with two towers is visible. The intersection is equipped with road signs: a stop signal, a pedestrian crossing sign, and warning signs. Cars can be seen on the roads and in the parking area, and the road markings include a sign for cyclists. The online webcam allows you to appreciate the calm rhythm of life in this Polish town, where cars drive past the monument, and residential houses and greenery are visible all around.
