The Town Hall of 1852: From Blauróg's Design to the Present Day
The central building of the square is the Town Hall, built in 1852 according to a design by inspector Blauróg from Białogard. This is a multi-story red brick structure of rectangular plan with a four-pitched roof covered in red tiles. The architecture of the Town Hall combines eclectic elements with a predominance of the Neo-Romanesque style. The facade features a plaque with the construction date and the city's coat of arms.
Before the construction of the current Town Hall, an old building from 1710 built using the so-called "Prussian wall" technique stood in the middle of the market. After lengthy disputes between the magistrate and city councilors, construction of the new building began in the autumn of 1852. On October 13, 1853, Superintendent Lemmann delivered a speech on the occasion of the building's dedication in the presence of the highest representatives of the city, district, and military troops.
The Military History of the Town Hall
The new building housed the city administration with the city treasury, the Prussian financial administration, and a garrison that occupied a third of the building. Prison facilities were equipped in the tower and other parts of the building. The military chapter of the Town Hall's history ended only in 1945 — on March 13, 1945, the Soviet military commandant of the city ordered the clock on the Town Hall tower to be restarted.
Pomeranian Dukes' Castle and the Legend of Hedwig of Brunswick
Adjacent to the Town Hall stands the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle — one of the oldest buildings in Szczecinek. The castle dates back to the 14th century and is a contemporary of the city. According to legend, the ghost of Duchess Hedwig of Brunswick haunts the castle walls. The castle is a contemporary of the city and one of the oldest buildings in Szczecinek.
Monument to the Victims of the Franco-Prussian War
On the square stands a military monument from 1870–1871 (Kriegerdenkmal). The monument was erected in 1895 in the park by Lake Trzesiecko and dedicated to the victims of the Franco-Prussian War. This is yet another testament to the complex military history of the region.
Modern Restoration
Throughout the postwar decades, the architecture of the Town Hall and its interiors remained virtually unchanged, except for some modifications to the interior spaces. Currently, the square and the Town Hall building are undergoing a restoration phase. Work is underway to restore the historical appearance of the building — new entrance doors are being installed that should return the Town Hall to its original look.
