The Historic Heart of Silesia — Pszczyna Market Square

Pszczyna is a small town in Silesia that hides an amazing history behind the facades of its ancient houses. According to a 19th-century archivist of the princely court, Scheffer, the first castle of the Piast princes stood here as early as the 12th century. This means that Pszczyna boasts nearly a thousand years of history, and its Market Square has witnessed countless historical events — from medieval trade to solemn military ceremonies.

One such event took place on August 28, 1922, when Józef Piłsudski pinned the Virtuti Militari order to Stanisław Kszyżowski on the Market Square. This moment is forever inscribed in the chronicles of the Pszczyna square.

The Architectural Ensemble of the Market Square

The complex of houses and mansions from the 18th century surrounding the Market Square is considered one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles in Silesia. Streets radiate from the square in accordance with the medieval urban plan, one of which is the main promenade of the town.

Among the key architectural landmarks is the Fryków Tenement House — a historic residential building on the Market Square, the Town Hall (Ratusz) — the municipal administration building, as well as the Evangelical-Augsburg church. The corner building No. 20 on Rynek and Żydowska streets (now Garncarska) is a protected architectural monument.

The Castle Palace along with its park adjoins the Pszczyna Market Square, creating a unique space where nature and history merge into one. On the southern side of the square is Brovar 16 — a brewery in a historic building that has become one of the symbols of modern Pszczyna.

The Gate of the Chosen and Other Legends

Pszczyna is rich in legends passed down from generation to generation. One of the most mysterious places is the Brama Wybrańców (Gate of the Chosen), located right by the Market Square. The name comes from the fact that the guards on duty were chosen by representatives of the Promnitz family — the princely dynasty that ruled Pszczyna for centuries.

From Medieval Trade to Modern Fairs

During the reign of Prince Casimir (1480–1517), horses and carts were hired on the Market Square that traveled to Kraków, Racibórz, Bytom, Żywice, and Opava, as well as to Brno and Hungary. Pszczyna was an important crossroads of trade routes, and the Market Square was its commercial center.

Interestingly, the first well on the Market Square was built only in 1811, the second — on the opposite side — in 1829. Previously, residents drew water from a flowing stream — it is quite difficult to imagine this today while looking at the well-maintained square.

Today, the Market Square remains a magnet for locals and tourists alike. Festivals and fairs are regularly held here, and the main winter event — the Pszczyna Christmas Market — will take place in 2025 on December 19–21, daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The Market Square will transform into a gingerbread-scented fairy tale with free carousels for children, an ice rink, concerts, and workshops.
