History of Whitehall and Collins Avenue

The Whitehall area, through which Collins Avenue runs, owes its name to a house called White Hall, which was previously located south of the village on Drumcondra Road Upper. Today it is an established residential area on the northern edge of central Dublin, situated between the suburbs of Santry and Drumcondra.

Collins Avenue serves as an important transport artery connecting various parts of the city. The Sporting Heart of the Area: Whitehall Colmcille GAA

The club has been the sporting hub of the Whitehall and Beaumont areas of Dublin 9 for 70 years. This is where local Gaelic football and hurling teams train, and matches and training sessions take place on the green pitch with its high windbreak netting and floodlight masts.

The club has made a significant contribution to the success of Dublin county teams and their victories in the Irish championships. Among its notable alumni is Tommy Drumm, former captain of the Dublin football team, who won the Irish championship and was awarded the GAA Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1983.

In 1966, the club leased a site from Dublin Corporation that had previously been occupied by the Thorndale tennis club on Collins Avenue. Later, the club managed to secure the use of Ellenfield Park, known as 'Plots', for playing fields.

Collins Avenue features diverse architecture — from cosy residential homes to functional commercial buildings.
