Live Webcam at the Brown Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti
In the heart of Transylvania, not far from the city of Brasov, lies a remarkable place where rescued brown bears have found a new home. The sanctuary in Zarnesti is not just a place for walks, but a large-scale rehabilitation center. Our live webcam allows you to peek into this green world and observe the animals in real time without leaving your home.
Rescue in the Carpathian Forests: The History of the Zarnesti Sanctuary
The story of this place began in 2005, when a decision was made to create a refuge for bears that had been subjected to cruel treatment in captivity. The sanctuary was founded in 2005 as a haven for animals rescued from cages and circuses. The initiative was made possible through a public-private partnership: the "Millions of Friends" Association, World Animal Protection, and the Zarnesti City Hall joined forces. The creation of the sanctuary was the result of a public-private partnership between these organizations. Since then, dozens of bears have been given shelter here, returning to them a life worthy of the wild.
Life of Brown Bears: Rehabilitation and Natural Environment
The main mission of this place is not tourist entertainment, but rescue and rehabilitation. The sanctuary is not a zoo, its goal is to provide a decent existence for animals that grew up in terrible conditions. Today, more than 130 rescued brown bears live on the territory. Here they can swim in ponds, climb trees, and forage for food. The bears' diet is as close to natural as possible: forest vegetation, nuts, and berries that they find themselves, plus additional feeding from staff. And with the onset of cold weather, the bears hibernate in dens, naturally, as in the wild.
Territory and Conditions: 69 Hectares of Freedom
The scale of this refuge is impressive. It is the world's largest brown bear sanctuary, covering 69 hectares of forest. The vast area allows the animals not to be crowded, but to behave as if they lived in the wild Carpathians. The forest area, grassy slopes, and stone ponds create ideal conditions for the bears. The online camera captures only a small part of this area, but even in this segment, you can see how spacious and natural the inhabitants feel.
How to Visit the Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary in Person
If watching through a screen cannot replace live impressions, you can travel to the Brasov region. It is important to remember the strict safety rules: children under 5 years old are not allowed on the territory for their own safety and the peace of the animals. Tours are conducted with a professional guide after reviewing the safety rules. In the winter period (from November 1 to April 30), the sanctuary is open from 11:00 to 12:00, and the rest of the year — from 9:00 to 11:00.
What You Can See on the Camera
The live broadcast shows a grassy slope with a stone pond, the water in which often has a greenish tint. Brown bears roam freely in this area — they can rest on the grass, splash in the pond, or simply explore their surroundings. Lush greenery, shrubs, and a forest area in the background. On the right side of the frame, the fence of the sanctuary territory is visible. The real-time camera allows you to see how the bears exhibit natural behavior: searching for food, interacting with each other, and enjoying the spaciousness of the forest habitat.
