Golden Bay Beach in Mellieha — online webcam
Golden Bay Beach in Malta: golden sand and turquoise water
Golden Bay Beach, also known as Il-Mixquqa in Maltese, is located on the northwest coast of Malta in the Mellieha area. It is one of the most popular sandy beaches on the island, awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness and quality infrastructure. The beach stretches 136 meters long and 82 meters wide, making it spacious enough for relaxation while still feeling cozy.
The beach got its name from the characteristic golden hue of its sand, which contrasts beautifully with the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This bay was formerly known as Military Bay, a reminder of the strategic importance of this coastline in the past.
Mellieha: a resort village with history
Mellieha is a large village in the Northern Region of Malta with a population of approximately 11,389 people (2019). The town's name comes from the Maltese word "melħ" meaning salt, which was traditionally harvested here. Today Mellieha is a popular tourist resort known for its sandy beaches, natural environment, and proximity to Popeye Village.
The town began to grow actively after 1844 during British rule, but has retained the atmosphere of a Maltese village. Visitors come here for the coastline and peaceful relaxation — away from the noisy tourist centers of Sliema and St. Julian's.
The historic Għajn Tuffieħa Tower
On the cliff between Golden Bay and neighboring Għajn Tuffieha Bay stands the historic Għajn Tuffieħa Tower, built in 1637 as the second of the seven Lascaris towers. These watchtowers were built by the Knights of the Maltese Order to protect the coast from Ottoman pirate raids.
The tower is located on a promontory and is visible from Golden Bay Beach. It is part of a coastal fortification system built under the direction of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris. Today the tower has been restored and is open for visitors — from its top there is a panoramic view of the bay.
Water sports and active recreation
Golden Bay is a hub for water sports in northwest Malta. At the Aquamarine Watersports center you can rent equipment for various activities. The company's fleet includes 9 Seadoo GTX pro jet skis, 12 modern motorboats, and over 50 non-motorized vessels.
The beach offers jet skiing, sea kayaking, catamaran trips, as well as stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The bay is sheltered by cliffs from strong winds, making it comfortable for water activities even in moderate sea conditions.
Infrastructure and amenities
The beach is equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. There are lifeguard towers, shower cabins, toilets, and changing rooms. On the premises there is a beach shop with leisure goods, restaurants, and cafes.
Free parking is available for visitors, though on weekends and holidays it can be crowded due to the influx of tourists. Volleyball nets are set up on the beach, and sun lounger and umbrella rentals are available. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.
Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands
Above Golden Bay Beach on a cliff stands the five-star Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands. The hotel is perched on top of a cliff and has a private descent to the beach. The distance from the hotel to the beach in a straight line is about 280 meters.
It is on the grounds of this hotel that the webcam is installed, broadcasting a panoramic view of the bay. From the height there is a view of the entire beach, rocky shores, and the endless Mediterranean Sea.
Neighboring bays and attractions
Next to Golden Bay is Għajn Tuffieha Bay — a quieter and more secluded spot with a sandy beach. You can walk between them along a trail along the rocky coastline. The Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park is also located nearby.
A few kilometers away is the famous Popeye Village, built as a film set for the 1980 movie and now a tourist attraction. Buses run from Mellieha to Golden Bay — routes 44, 101, 102, 223, 224.
What the camera shows
The online camera at Golden Bay Beach in Mellieha broadcasts a panoramic view of the sandy beach with golden sand, turquoise Mediterranean waves, and rocky cliffs along the coast. In the foreground, sand dunes with dry grass and low vegetation are visible — a characteristic landscape of the Maltese coast.
To the right, the beach infrastructure is visible: white tents, cafe and rental buildings. On the sand — vacationers with umbrellas and sun loungers, a volleyball net. In the upper right corner, a weather widget displays the current temperature, humidity, and wind speed. At the top of the screen is a beach visitor counter.
The camera operates in real time and allows you to monitor the beach conditions, sea state, and weather in Malta. It is a convenient way to plan a beach visit — to see how many people are on the beach, what the waves are like, and whether the sky is overcast.
