Beach of Purity in Gallipoli — online webcam
Where the Beach of Purity is located
The Beach of Purity, or Spiaggia della Purità in Italian, is located in the very heart of the old town of Gallipoli — on the western coast of the Italian region of Apulia, in the province of Lecce. This is one of the few urban beaches in Italy located directly beneath the ancient fortress walls of the historic center. Seno della Purità bay cuts into the rocky shore of the island-peninsula, forming a cozy sandy strip surrounded by Mediterranean architecture.
Gallipoli is a city with a rich history, founded by the Greeks even before our era. Today it is a popular resort in Salento, attracting tourists with its clean water, snow-white buildings, and the atmosphere of southern Italy. The Beach of Purity is one of the most atmospheric spots in the city, accessible only by foot through the narrow streets of the old town.
The history of the name and the Santa Maria della Purità church
The name of the beach is directly linked to the Santa Maria della Purità church (Santa Maria della Purità — Saint Mary of Purity), which rises above the bay. Locals simply call this place "la Purita" (la Puritate). The church dome is one of the first architectural details seen by tourists descending to the beach through the ancient streets.
This is one of the few free beaches in Gallipoli, located in the historic district of the city. Unlike equipped beaches with sun loungers and umbrellas, Spiaggia della Purità retains its natural character — there is no commercial infrastructure here, only sand, sea, and ancient walls. According to local beliefs, the water in the bay is crystal clear and calm, which gave the name to the entire area.
The Greek Fountain — symbol of Gallipoli
Not far from the Beach of Purity is one of the city's main attractions — the Greek Fountain (Fontana Greca). This monument is considered one of the oldest fountains in Italy and dates back to the 3rd–2nd century BC. For a long time it was considered the oldest fountain in the country, until new research clarified the chronology.
On one side of the fountain, three original reliefs have been preserved with scenes from Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and inscriptions in Latin. The fountain's history is full of relocations: in 1548 it was moved near the ancient church of Saint Nicholas, and in 1560 the fountain was dismantled again and installed in its current location. Curiously, the back side of the fountain looks completely different — it is an 18th-century style with the city's coat of arms featuring a rooster.
According to legend, the rooster on Gallipoli's coat of arms refers to the myth of the Minotaur and the Palace of Knossos — a symbol connecting the city with ancient Greek history. The Greek Fountain is a must-visit for those who want to experience the true spirit of Gallipoli.
The beach beneath the fortress walls of the old town
The Beach of Purity is located beneath the western fortress walls of Gallipoli's old town. This is a so-called "incredible urban beach" — a crescent of sand located directly beneath the ancient fortifications of the island-peninsula. Above the beach rise typical Mediterranean buildings in white and cream colors, creating a picturesque backdrop.
Access to the beach is only on foot through the narrow streets of the old town. Parking here is impossible, so tourists leave their cars outside the walls and descend to the bay along ancient paths. Walking along the fortress walls offers a panoramic view of the beach and the Ionian Sea — one of the most photographed views of Gallipoli.
The curved stone promenade with arcades frames the beach, creating a cozy space for walks. In the shade of the walls it stays cool even on the hottest days, and the water in the bay is always calm — the rocky shores protect it from waves.
Legends and myths of the Bay of Purity
The name "Purity" (Purità) is connected not only with the Santa Maria della Purità church, but also with local legends about the Virgin Mary. According to legends, it was in this bay that miraculous phenomena related to purity and chastity occurred. For centuries, locals have passed down stories that the water in Seno della Purità has special transparency and healing properties.
The Greek Fountain is also shrouded in myths. The three reliefs on its facade depict scenes from Ovid's "Metamorphoses" — ancient Greek myths about the transformations of gods and heroes. For a long time, scientists debated the exact age of the fountain: some considered it a Hellenistic monument, others a more recent work. Today, Fontana Greca is recognized as one of the most important archaeological sites in Southern Italy.
The city's symbol — the rooster on the coat of arms — also has mythological roots. According to one version, it adorned the shield of the King of Crete, connecting Gallipoli with the legend of the Minotaur and the labyrinth of the Palace of Knossos. These myths give the city a special flavor and attract lovers of ancient history.
What the camera shows
The live-streaming webcam is positioned to provide a view of the Beach of Purity, the sea, and the shoreline. The image shows a sandy beach with clear turquoise water, a curved stone promenade with arcades where people stroll. In the background are typical Mediterranean white and cream buildings of old Gallipoli. Above the beach rises the dome of the Santa Maria della Purità church, and in good weather the camera offers a view of the Ionian Sea all the way to the horizon.
The online camera allows you to observe beach life in real time: sunbathers on the sand, children playing at the water's edge, and tourists descending to the bay through ancient streets. The left part of the image is partially obscured by a graphic element of the broadcast — this is standard practice for resort webcams.
