Zgornje Jezersko: Where Ancient Mountains Meet
Jezersko is surrounded by two geological giants. From the east loom the Kamnik Alps, around 60 million years old, while from the west the area is bounded by the Karawanks — mountains over 300 million years old, formed from an ancient coral reef. This proximity makes the valley's relief strikingly contrasting, and the air here is rich and pure.
The Vanished Lake and Planšar Reservoir
The main natural anomaly of these places is the disappearance of a huge glacial lake. Today, only a small heart-shaped basin remains in its place. At an altitude of 902 meters, fed by the mountain stream Jezernica, Planšar Lake (Planšarsko jezero) is a quiet backwater that has sheltered fish and many bird species. This place attracts not only tourists but also researchers of geological processes.
Historical Border of Duchies
The Jezersko valley and the main ridge of the Kamnik Alps have served as a natural boundary for centuries. Here ran the border between the inner Austrian duchies: Carinthia, Styria, and Carniola. Although today the main ridge lies entirely within Slovenia, Jezersko Pass (Jezersko sedlo) still connects Austrian Carinthia and the Slovenian municipality of Jezersko, reminding visitors of the region's complex history.
A Slovenian Village with Alpine Status
Zgornje Jezersko became one of the first Slovenian villages to be awarded the status of "Mountaineering Village" under the Alpine Convention. This award is given for responsible attitude toward nature and preservation of unique architecture. Local residents carefully guard their traditions, including sheep farming. On the slopes of Goli vrh (1787 m), sheep of the local Jezersko-Solčava breed, developed specifically for these high-altitude conditions, still graze.
Flora and Fauna of the Kamnik Alps
The plant life around Jezersko is rich and diverse. In the mountain forests and meadows, you can encounter amazing species. For example, the rarest orchid grows in the Kamnik Alps — "yellow lady's slippers" (Cypripedium calceolus), a yellow flower resembling Cinderella's shoe. The waters of Planšar Lake and the surrounding forests serve as home to many bird species.
Active Recreation: Routes to the Summits
For tourists, Jezersko is a gateway to the world of hiking. One of the most scenic routes starts at Planšar Lake and leads to the mountain hut Češka koča, which was recognized as "Hut of the Year" in Slovenia in 2024. The trail passes through the valley with panoramic views, then climbs through the forest and alpine meadows to the Ravni terrace. Another popular route is the ascent of Goli vrh (1787 m). This is the best viewpoint overlooking the entire valley, located right on the border with Austria between Velika Baba and Jezersko vrh saddle.
